Hi there,
The court has a very wide range of punishments available for an assault that does not involve a weapon, depending on how serious the assault is deemed to be. A drink-fuelled scuffle is likely to attract a small fine or community service. It's only if the assault is fairly aggressive and has been premeditated that the court is likely to consider stiff fines or even a short custodial sentence (most likely to be suspended if a first offence.) The other factor the court will take into account is the record of the convicted person. If this is a first offence it is unlikely to attract anything much more than a smack on the wrist but if it's the umpteenth time they've been warned then they could be in for a nasty shock.
