What would cause a teen aged girl to have tonsillitis for over a year?

Discuss this question

Question found in Health & Fitness In General
Teen girls have a lot going on - hormone changes, often interest in their weight, growth spurts etc. They are often not the best at looking after their health making infections much harder to get rid off. There is a condition ( see website below ) called chronic cryptic tonsillitis. The tonsils contain many small pockets and infoldings called crypts, which can trap small food particles and other debris. This can produce small, white stone-like particles called tonsilliths, composed of bacteria and dead cells, which are foul-smelling, can prolong the infection, and may cause a mild, intermittent sore throat.

Or it could be caused by a virus which are more difficult to get rid of.

Maybe getting them removed is an option?

I am a 27 year old female. Single with no kids. For hours throughout the day for a week now, I have adrenaline rushes and feel like I'm living in a constant state of fight or flight mode. Any reason why or suggestion for what I can do?

Discuss this question

Question found in Health & Fitness In General
Sounds - to my untutored ear - like panic attacks or anxiety attacks.

From http://www.anxieties.com
"A panic attack is a sudden rush of uncomfortable physical symptoms coupled with thoughts of impending doom (making a scene, heart attack, not being able to breathe). Although the first panic attack may take place in a distinct situation, further episodes are unpredictable as to time or place."

I think you need to see your doctor. They can medicate if necessary or refer to the appropriate type of therapist.

Good Luck

Comments :
Thank you. I found some of the information on the referenced website helpful to me. I dont understand the longivety of the attacks (a week) or even what could have initially caused them, but for that I will see a doctor. Thank you for your time and assistance.

I am only 13 years old I am desperate to get pregnant I am scared of what my mum will say if I do but I still don't care I want to have a baby?

Discuss this question

Question found in Parenting & Family In General
You are only 13 - you are still a child - the last thing you need is to have a child yourself. Why are you desperate to have a child? To have something to love? To be loved? Explain this to your Mum, explain how you feel, why you feel so lonely, she'd much rather you tell her this than that you are already pregnant.

Don't do it, you'll seriously mess up the rest of your life, and condemn your child to a life of struggle, hardship and more than likely a similar fate to yours. Learn, get a good job, a good man then become a good mother - one who can stand on her own two feet, doesn't need benefits, doesn't need handouts.

Talk to your mum now, not after you've done it.

Is self harming normal and if not where can I get help?

Discuss this question

Question found in Abuse & Recovery
It's not uncommon but it's not 'normal'. See your doctor for a referral and soon.

From http://www.mind.org.uk/Information/Booklets/Understanding/Understanding+self-harm.htm

Self-harm is a way of expressing very deep distress. Often, people don't know why they self-harm. It's a means of communicating what can't be put into words or even into thoughts and has been described as an inner scream. Afterwards, people feel better able to cope with life again, for a while.

Self-harm is a broad term. People may injure or poison themselves by scratching, cutting or burning their skin, by hitting themselves against objects, taking a drug overdose, or swallowing or putting other things inside themselves. It may also take less obvious forms, including taking stupid risks, staying in an abusive relationship, developing an eating problem, such as anorexia or bulimia, being addicted to alcohol or drugs, or simply not looking after their own emotional or physical needs.

These responses may help you to cope with feelings that threaten to overwhelm you; painful emotions, such as rage, sadness, emptiness, grief, self-hatred, fear, loneliness and guilt. These can be released through the body, where they can be seen and dealt with. Self-harm may serve a number of purposes at the same time. It may be a way of getting the pain out, of being distracted from it, of communicating feelings to somebody else, and of finding comfort. It can also be a means of self-punishment or an attempt to gain some control over life. Because they feel ashamed, afraid, or worried about other people's reactions, people who self-harm often conceal what they are doing rather than draw attention to it.

It's worth remembering that most people behave self-destructively at times, even if they don't realise it. Perfectly ordinary behaviour, such as smoking, eating and drinking too much, or working long hours, day after day, can all be helping people to numb or distract themselves and avoid being alone with their thoughts and feelings.

I am like 6 months pregnant.. anyways I am almost positive that it is my boyfriends, we had unprotected sex many many times, he also ejaculated inside of me. However, there was one time when I messed around with another guy. We didn't have sex, because he couldn't get hard. We tried to put it in etc... but it didn't work. So my question is do you know if there could be a chance that it is this other guys and if so how big a chance???? Thanx!

Discuss this question

Question found in Pregnancy
It's probably your boyfriends but it is possible to get pregnant without full intercourse. You'll need a paternity test to 100% sure. One can be done before the baby is born or after.

If you have had unprotected sex with your boyfriend "many, many times" over a number of months it would make you wonder why you hadn't conceived before and might make it more likely to be the other guys.

You need to test to be 100% sure.

I am 38 yo female, mom of 5 in ages 17 to1. I am on synthroid .1mg since march 2005. I've always had regular periods and no problem getting pregnant, from Jan to April I was on depo but stopped, aug my period became regular again, so in Oct I started trying to conceive again. I got my period on Oct 4, today 26, I got it again. Could the medicine be interfering with my conceiving, as my other pregnancies I was on no medicine, and now I'm concerned I may never ovulate again, and also I am constantly nauseous and weigh 15lbs more. Should I be worried and is synthroid to blame?

Discuss this question

Question found in Women's Health
Synthroid should not interfere with your ovulation and if safe to take when pregnant - so you shouldn't be worried on that front.

It's not unusual to take a while to regulate your cycle after stopping depo. But because of the nausea and the weight gain I think you should see your doctor to check your bloods - both for pregnancy and for the dosage of your thyroid drugs.

Good luck - at 38 you might take a little longer to conceive than you did at 36 but it's far from impossible.

I have restraining order against my husband and he wants me to call him and solve our problems peacefully and he promises to change himself and start a new life in our marriage. He wants me to call him so can I call him bcz he told my friend he still loves me.

Discuss this question

Question found in People & Relationships In General
Why do you have the restraining order? Is it because he's been violent? Was he violent only once? I doubt it or you wouldn't have been able to get the order - so he has a history of violent abuse towards you.

Has he told you he'd change before? I bet yes. So why believe him?

He's told your friend he still loves you? If you love someone do you hit them? If you love someone do you frighten someone?

Has he taken any steps towards getting therapy for his anger? If he drinks has he stopped drinking? Has he made ANY changes that would make you think if you take him back things will be different?

Most abused wives take far far too much abuse - take their husbands back and forgive them over and over again - until he hurts them so badly that they are finally made to face up to the fact that they will never change.

Life without him is possible. Imagine a life without fear, without being intimidated, without being scared when you hear the door, wondering what mood he's into tonight. Or a life with a caring good man who supports you rather then hurting you, who cherishes you rather than frightening you.

Do you really want to go back to a bully? Find out if he's made any steps towards changing and if not then forget him. If he has, then tell him to keep going with changing and get back to you in 6 months or a year.

Personally I'd ditch him completely - I'm a "one strike and you're out" when it comes to domestic abuse kind of woman though.

Explain Zen Buddhism.

Discuss this question

Question found in Spirituality In General
Zen is a form of Mahayana Buddhism that places great importance on moment-by-moment awareness and 'seeing deeply into the nature of things' by direct experience. Zen emerged as a distinct school in China and spread to Vietnam, Korea, Japan, and, in modern times, the rest of the world.

The key beliefs of Zen focus primarily on The Four Noble Truths and The Noble Eightfold Path.

The Four Noble Truths are:

The first truth is the observation that suffering or unhappiness, referred to as dukkha, is pervasive in life. Dukka is explained to be suffering or unhappiness of any kind. (i.e. the desire for wealth or respect, the distaste for bad weather).

The second truth explains that the cause of dukkha is craving or clutching at life. Our unhappiness results from our desiring to make life fit our preconceptions of what should be or what we would like it to be.

The third truth explains that dukkha can be ended by ending the craving, which in turn, can be achieved by following the fourth truth.
The fourth truth reveals to follow The Noble Eightfold Path.

The Noble Path reveals the following:

The first and second relate to right views and right understanding of the mind. These proposals require proper understanding of Buddha's method (nature of dukkha).

The third, fourth, and fifth paths refer to right speech, right conduct, and right vocation. They offer simple suggestions of prudence. One should follow "the path" to achieve spiritual goodness.

The sixth, seventh and eighth paths apply to meditation. Right effort, right awareness(smiriti), and right contemplation (smadhi) are necessary to achieve complete meditation.

In general, Zen is different from other religious groups. Zen is not a religion in the sense that religion is generally understood. Zen has no God to worship, no ceremonial rights to observe, no "future abode" to which the dead are destined. Zen is free of all dogmatic principles that Christianity and other religions are tied to. Zen has no set doctrines which are imposed on its followers for acceptance. Zen teachings come out of one's own mind. It is addressed to the human heart. It is a living experience, a "creative impulse."

All major religions, Buddhism included, have split into schools and sects. But the different sects of Buddhism have never gone to war with each other and they go to each others temples and worship together. This understanding by the different Buddhist sects is vary rare. Buddhism has evolved in different forms so it can be relevant to different cultures. For example, the practice of Zen Buddhism is different among the Chinese, Americans, and Japanese. Because Zen Buddhism is the creation of the T'ang dynasty in China (where it originated), it is difficult for Anglo-Saxons and the Japanese to absorb anything quite so Chinese as Zen. The Chinese practice involves the achievement and respect for a vision of a universal way of nature, wherein good and evil are both considered as parts of existence. Japanese Zen promotes rigid self-discipline and was popular among the Samurai class. Meanwhile, American Zen is self-conscious and subjective and is used to justify life and one's desires. The types of Buddhism all may seem very different but at the center of all of them is the Four Noble Truths and The Eightfold Path.
