I am a home owner in Newfoundland Canada, My heat source is oil fired forced air. The furnace was installed in 1985 and it has a 1/4 HP blower.

My brother just bought a house in Ontario Canada and was told that he should run the blower all the time as this would keep the home heated evenly and the furnace would fire less, this would save money for him. Is this a good idea?

Question found in Repair & Renovate In General
In general this does sound like a good idea. It's the same advocate that's given to users of central heating of any kind: that it's more economical to keep the heating on all the time, with the thermostat set to, say 19 or 20, than to keep switching the system on and off "to save fuel". The reason is that the amount of energy required to heat up the entire house from cold is far greater than the amount used to keep topping up the heat level.

But you can always try leaving the blower on all the time and measure or estimate the amount of fuel used, and so get an idea which system is the most economical for you.

I am disabled and looking for a way to make extra money at home. Where can I find legitimate companies that offer this type of work? I have always been told that I should NEVER do anything where they want money up front to tell us about their program...I will appreciate any assistance you can give. Thanks Carolyn, Phx. AZ

Question found in Entrepreneurship
Hi Carolyn,

Sadly there are not that many ways to earn extra money from home and most of those offered on the Internet are, at worst, scams or, at best, hopelessly over-optimistic about how much you can earn.

Certainly the advice you have been given about never parting with money is spot on - no legitimate company would ever ask you for money.

The only kind of home work that I know that pays anything like reasonably is that of stuffing direct mail pieces into envelopes on behalf of direct mail companies. Usually they are willing to deliver the pieces to your home and collect the finished work and though the pay isn't anything to write home about, the work is regular and there is considerable demand for it.

Try Googling direct mail houses in your region.

Good luck with your job hunting

I came across a Psychologist who just asks you to draw on a blank sheet of paper a drawing of a Person.

What she then does is that LOOKS AT THE DRAWING AND TELLS YOU IN PRECISE DETAIL A LOT ABOUT YOUR PERSONALITY. And I just cant say that what she replies is wrong in anyway.

I want to know, how is it that a person can just look at a drawing of a PERSON and tell you so much about your personality.

Question found in Psychology
Hi Rupert,

There is a branch of psychology known as gestalt psychology (from the German word for whole) and one of the basic ideas is that we tend very strongly to project our own self-image and our own feelings onto the outside world. This is used by gestalt psychologists in a number of ways.

For instance if you have a dream that (say) a dark giant is chasing you through a forest but you find refuge in a castle, then a gestalt psychologist would say that all these images are aspect of yourself - the giant, the forest and the castle are all you in some way.

This same principle is often used in asking someone to draw a picture. What most of us do in these circumstances is to draw someone like how we imagine ourselves to be, so an experienced psychologist who has seen a lot of such drawings can often interpret very accurately what we are depicting about ourselves.

How to deter foxes in your garden?

Discuss this question

Question found in Animals & Nature
One popular school of thought at the moment is to put lion dung around your garden, and London Zoo actually sells lion dung for this purpose. The scent is said to scare foxes away.

Mrs Journo suggested this to me when we started having trouble with foxes, but then I thought "Hang on a minute. The reason I want to get rid of the foxes is because they keep cr*pping in my garden - and I'm seriously considering buying more cr*p to put down!" I think not.

Is it true that Goose, and not Turkey is the Christmas fayre of tradition?

How did this tradition start?

Discuss this question

Question found in Food And Drink In General
The tradition is that Queen Elizabeth was eating a goose when news came of the defeat of the Spanish Armada and she declared that henceforward goose should be eaten in celebration of the victory.

When I was a child 50 years ago, we ate chicken at Christmas and turkey only became the 'traditional' meal in relatively recent years.

Am I correct in thinking that Jehovah's Witnesses do not celebrate Christmas?

Why is this?

Is there are specific festival that JH's do celebrate?

Discuss this question

Question found in Religion & Spirituality In General
Yes, you're quite right. Jehovah's Witnesses believe in the Old testament part of the Bible but not the New Testament part, because they don't accept that Jesus was the promised saviour. So they don't celebrate Christmas because it's Christ's birthday.
