hello
 |
I'm not planning on ever doing this but it came up one day and I was wondering... if I made pictures of me when I was under 18 and then I turned 18 would I be able to legally post those on the Internet or sell them or whatever? I'm not planning on doing it I was just wondering so don't be calling me a $lut or nothing.

Hi there,
Interesting question. I think the answer has to be no, it wouldn't be legal for you to do this, even though the pictures are of you. The reason is that I don't think the laws about under-age pornography say anything about the relationship between the subject of the pictures and the person posting them or selling them. The law simply says it's illegal to post pornographic pictures of people under 18. However, my guess would be that the police wouldn't prosecute unless they thought you were make some huge business out of it.

I have a hot and cold washing machine, I am going to get a cold water fill only washing machine, how should I seal off the existing hot water pipe?

Hi there,
If the original machine was properly installed there should be little plastic taps fitted to the inlet pipes for the machine - a blue tap on the cold pipe and a red one on the hot pipe. It should be adequate for you simply to turn off the red tap with a screwdriver and disconnect the hose. However, you'd better check that the tap is in fact watertight, because the washers in them can get compressed over the years and they can become a little leaky.

We often drive within England from the South East to the South West. It's striking that when we reach the Salisbury plain in the evening, the level of light changes. It seems that east of there, is much darker than west of it. Is this reflection of the Atlantic ocean? Is this a trick of the eye due to the 'curving' of the earth? We've discussed this a lot, but can't work it out.. Any ideas?

Hi there,
I think perhaps the phenomenon you're seeing is that when you get to Salisbury Plain, you are seeing far further to the horizon on all sides than one normally sees in south eastern England - you are literaly seeing more sky and this gives a greater clarity of light.
You see the same phenomenon when you drive up to parts of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire where the land is flat and you can see for miles. the sky actually looks bigger!

Hi there,
The countries who signed the Treaty of Rome in 1977 (to which Britain was later added) were know for several decades as the EEC (European Economic Community). This name was meant to denote that the countries were still separate sovereign states but had joined together for purely trade and economic purposes.
In 1992, the member states signed a new agreement committing themselves to closer union leading to the eventual formation of a federal state. This new overall aim was signified by a change of name to European Union (EU).

The word robot was coined by writer Karel Capek in his 1921 play Rossum's Universal Robots. He meant a machine in the shape of a person who would function as a tireless unpaid servant.
However, it has proved much more complicated than envisaged to create a real artificial person (like Commander Data in Star Trek)

Why can a poodle and a spaniel breed together but a chicken cannot breed with a goose?

Discuss this question

| Question found in Science In General |
 |
Hi there,
A spaniel and a poodle can breed because they are members of the same species, Canis familiaris, the common dog. All dog breeds belong to the same species and can be bred - even a great dane and a chihuahua. But a chicken is a different species from a goose so they cannot breed.

I tried downloading a quicktime file. When it shows "done" all I get is a quicktime logo with a question mark over it. I am using a Microsoft /windows platform. Since all quicktime components/plugins are updated there must be a different reason why the video does not play.

I'd suggest the following steps. First click Start, find Quickstart Player and click to start. Check that the application does in fact start. (This may sound obvious but you may have uninstalled it or it may have become corrupted).
If it starts all right, leave the application open and then download the Quicktime file.
If the downloaded file still doesn't start, go into Quickstart, click Help then update software to make sure you do have the latest versions.
If the download still doesn't work, I'd suggest uninstalling Quicktime and re-installing it.
I have to say that I find Quicktime more trouble than it's worth and I never use it. If a download is only available as Quicktime, I don't bother with it. There are a million downloads out there for Windows Player and Real Player.

Hi you have several options (I'm assuming you are in the UK). First you can search for a signature. If you're fortunate enough to find one, you can then search for information on the painter on Google and you can search eBay to see if any of his/her paintings come up for sale. You can also consult directories of painters in your local library.
If that is not possible, you can take the painting along to the big London auction houses such as Sothebys, where experts will take a look at it and advise you on likely auction value. This is a free service.
Finally, there are TV antique shows such as The Antique Roadshow, Flog It! and Cash in the Attic. Consult the BBC website at www.bbc.co.uk for further details.
