Hi there,
The stone ornaments that garden centres sell and that people like to put on their gateposts are modelled on famous originals from great houses with gardens from the golden age of eighteenth century landscape gardening. In that era, the great houses like to display the fact that they could grow exotic and unusual foreign fruits like oranges and grape vines and pineapples in their glass houses, so they illustrated the exotic fruits in their garden statuary. It was their way of saying 'we are wealthy'.

On what basis does the superstition 'don't place new shoes on the table' have?

Discuss this question

| Question found in Superstitions |
 |
Hi there,
In its full form, the superstition is 'Don't put new shoes on the table - it will cause a family argument'.
This sounds like a common sense piece of advice rather than a superstition as such - it would certainly cause a row in my house if someone put their shoes on the table - new or not!

Does the colour Purple have any associations? ie; Green for envy, Red for danger, Purple for....

 |
Hi There,
In Imperial Rome, purple was the imperial colour and only members of the royal family were permitted to wear purple. The reason was that it was extremely expensive since it was prepared from the shells of beetles. The colour still has royal associations today - for instance the cushion on which the sword rests that the Queen uses to knight people is traditionally a purple velvet cushion.

After death, how long does it take on average for the human body to decompose to a skeleton?
|
|
Discuss this question
|
| Question found in Science In General |
 |
Hi there,
There is no average time - it depends entirely on the conditions in which the body is buried or entombed. In hot dry conditions, the body will never decompose, it will simply mummify and gradually dry out. In order for the body to decompose rapidly, it needs to be buried in damp earth in conditions that are not too cold and not too hot. The decomposition process is carried on by microorganisms (and bigger things which we won't go into). Under ideal conditions, a body could be reduced to a skeleton within 6 months.

Can you tell me why is ice slippy? thanks

 |
Hi there,
This is by no means as simple a question as it might seem. It used to be thought (and is still often said) that the reason ice is slippery when you skate on it is because the pressure of the skate blade lowers the melting point of the ice and hence it become liquid. This explanation is now considered by some scientists to be dubious. (Simply having a film of water on a solid surface does not make it any easier to skate on). Research at University of California has shown that the crystals in the surface of ice vibrate much more than other solids, giving them the properties of some liquids.

Hi There,
All the options you speak about have been available for years and are currently available if you want them. You can buy portrait monitors (simply Google it) although they do tend to be expensive specialist monitors for software developers and graphics design studios. A better bet is simply to buy larger plasma screen conventional monitors so that the page in Word (or whatever application) is shown full size.
You certainly can rotate your screen through a variety of turns if you use Windows XP. Simply right click your mouse on the desktop and select Graphic Options and then Graphics Properties.

 |
Hi there,
It could be that you've picked up an infection in your sinuses or other ear, nose or throat passages. Your doctor can confirm it for you. If it's a virus infection, which is the most common, there's nothing you can do except take something to make you feel better (Lemsip or whiskey and ginger wine depending on your preference)

I am a 47 yrs old female. I went to the doctor for a back ache he took a urine sample and found some blood in the sample what could this mean?

Hi there,
blood in one's urine is not so alarming as it sounds. About 10% of people have this condition and it's more common in women than in men. By far the commonest cause is an infection of the urinary tract or kidneys.
You can read all about it here:-
http://www.emedicinehealth.com/blood_in_the_urine/article_em.htm
But please don't scare yourself silly with all that medical jargon - talk to your doctor and ask him/her to explain the cause to you.

Hi There,
It's important that you find out the cause of your problem as quickly as possible. It could be related to your diet, to your lifestyle and stress levels, or it could be some recurring infection that you need to identify. But it could also be the result of something else, so it's important for you to consult your doctor as soon as possible.
