Hi There,
You can bring a civil action against (sue) someone only if they have damaged you financially or damaged your reputation.
The fact that the police failed to read someone their rights does not consitute civil damage by itself. However, if as a result of the police's failure to Mirandize the person, the court throws out the case against him, then he might consider suing for wrongful arrest. If the court finds him guilty, he hasn't a leg to stand on - though he might have cause for an appeal against conviction.

Hi There,
Cs in Latin are always conventionally hard (Ks). So that Isaac Newton's "Principia Mathematica" is Prinkipia mathematika. And Julia Caesar is pronounced Julius Kaisar. (This is the origin of the words Kaiser and Czar.)

Were mistakes ever made in recording battalions of dead soldiers in WW1? I have traced my grandfather's war death certificate, he is listed as in Bat 1 but his service (where he was stationed) before the war shows that he was in Bat 2. As bat 2 RSF ended up in Ypres in October 1914 with Bat 1, could he have been transferred in to bat 1 then?

Hi There,
It was not uncommon for soldiers to be transferred between units and even between regiments sometimes. In the second war my father in law was transferred between the Royal Army Medical Corps and the Royal Engineers. I know of another case where someone was transferred from the Royal Artillery to the Royal Marines.

Can I play a Bryan Adams CD at my wedding?

 |
Hi There,
You will obviously need the agreement of whoever officiates at your wedding (the clergyman if in church or Registrar if in a Register Officer) but the choice of music is up to you. you can also change the wedding vows to suit yourself if you wish (some people like to use Native American marriage vows for example).
In most churches and register offices they are used to people requesting their own music and providing a cd or dvd, and they have the sound equipment there to play it (you obviously need to check that out in advance.)
There was no doubt a time when choosing to play Wagner's Bridal Chorus from Loengrin, or Mendelssohn's wedding march was seen as revolutionary - now it's seen as the norm.

Why are the Addicks called so?

Hi There,
This from the Charlton Athletic website history:-
. . . the players often used a local fish and chip shop as a changing room before games and this is supposedly where the clubs nickname 'addicks' is derived from (a play on the word 'haddock'). However, others have claimed that it was the owner of the shop who inspired the name by nailing a haddock to a board and using it as a mascot during games!
See http://charltonathletic.rivals.net/default.asp?sid=905&p=2&stid=8382804
When I was a child in the 1950s we lived about a quarter of a mile from Charlton's ground. When there was a home match we knew exactly what the score was and how many near misses there had been from the roar of the crowd.

I thought the body naturally contains e. coli in its system. Is the e. coli often broadcasted on the news to cause food poisoning the same strain of e. coli or a different one?

Hi There,
E. coli bacteria live in the digestive tract of mammals including humans, are excreted in large numbers in faeces, and are usually beneficial. However there are two exceptions. The first is if some bacteria from faeces gets into other parts of the body, such as the urinary tract, where they can cause infections.
The second is that there are aggressive strains that produce toxins and hence cause food poisoning. These strains include E coli O157:H7, E coli O121 and E. coli O104:H21 and are usually found in cheese and other dairy products.
