I went to a funeral recently in a country church. The weather was awful and the church overflowing. Despite being a hat wearing community I appeared to be the only one wearing a hat. It rained heavily and everyone else (those without hats!) put up umbrella's; I wore my hat to protect myself from the driving rain..... What is the correct etiquette for men regarding wearing hats at funerals? Should I have removed my hat and got even wetter? ...funnily enough these concerns did not affect me at the time (only hours after once I'd dried out!) thank you

Hi There,
There really isn't any etiquette regarding the wearing and removing hats any longer, as it has been fading out since the 1960s. However, many people still regard funerals as of sufficient importance to warrant still obeying the rules that our Victorians rigidly adhered to.
The rule is that gentlemen should always remove their hat at a funeral, as a sign of respect for the deceased person and the feelings of their spouse or relatives. This is true even if it is cold or rains, so if you are going to observe the rules, then you need to take an umbrella as well as a hat - as your fellow mourners obviously did.
There's a good site on the subject here:-

How deep is earth?
|
|
Discuss this question

| Question found in Science In General |

Hi There,
The answer is it varies depending on the type of underlying rock from nothing to many feet. Earth is made up of the bits of surface rock that are insoluable in water and so are left behind as the rock weathers out. There are two main minerals, the first is silicon dioxide, which is quartz or sand, and the second is called Limonite and is an oxide of iron - it's this that gives earth it brownish or rusty colour.
In a mild climate where there is regular rainfall, the earth binds together, plants take root and this binds the soil firmly so that it accumulates year on year and can reach depths of five or six feet. In arid climates, the earth is dry and tends not to bind, so it's easily blown away by the wind, leaving bare rock exposed.

Hi There,
Try AGS Cyberlounge at 178 Whitchurch Road, Heath, Cardiff. They charge £1 an hour. This is very reasonable as most cyber cafes charge £2 to £4. They have a website at:-

I have a leak under my kitchen sink. It's coming from one of the nuts on the trap, the one nearest the sink itself. The water is seeping out of the top of the nut. I can't see any cracks or anything. I'm wondering if it's due to a blocked sink, as when I have my washing machine on, some of the water comes up out of the plug hole. Thanks for any advice!

Hi There,
It sounds very much like a blockage from what you say. Here's some things to try. First run a cycle on your washing machine with no detergent and no clothes, on the highest heat setting. (You should do this periodically anyway to get rid of the build up of slimy detergent residues). That should eliminate the washing machine as a contributory factor.
Next buy a carton of caustic soda or proprietary sink unblocker from your local hardware store, prepare it according to the instructions, and pour it down the sink. (Be sure to observe all the safety precautions especially wearing rubber gloves and protecting your eyes. Also be sure to add caustic to the water and not water to the caustic).
After flushing away the caustic according to the instructions, you can also try the good ole plunger as well. If you pump it up and down vigorously it will clear most things. (The usual culprits are fats from cooking, and hair from hair washing).

Is loving someone a decision or an honest feeling?

Hi There,
Interesting question! I'd say that love in the classical romantic sense - the subject of ten thousand films and books where a young man and a young woman sit under a tree and carve their initials in linked hearts - is undoubtedly a feeling, pure emotion. It doesn't happen every time, but so many people say that when they first met the person they later married, they thought "I fancy you". That comes straight from the heart and the head has nothing to do with it.
But at the same time, people can grow to love each other over a period of years and this is perhaps more of a growing, conscious awareness of the other's good points and how kind and considerate they are, rather than an instant "wow!"
At the end of the day, though, I'd say love is a feeling. As Blaise Pascal put it, "The heart has its reasons that reason knows nothing of". Only a French philosopher could put it so aptly.

My right testicle frequently retracts into my abdomen. Should I be concerned?

Hi There,
This isn't cause for concern (unless you experience any unusual pain or discomfort). Your testes descend from the abdomen in puberty and there is still room for them to retract which they sometimes do when it is very cold for example.

Hi There,
As you say, water is practically colourless. But when you stand on the beach what you see is the sea reflecting the colour of the sky, which is usually blue. If you look when it's grey and overcast, you'll see that the sea looks grey too.
