How did the asteroid hit change life on earth, and how long did the effects last?

Asteroid hit was not a single incident in our planets story. There had been countless hits in the early period. The effect of these depended on the size of the asteroid. The effect could be disastrous if there were a number of such hits one after another not far apart. Such hits can stir up clouds of dust that block out sun completely starving the plant life for centuries as well as cause suffocation thus making it hard for animals to survive. Two instances can be mentioned.
About 250 million years back, before the age of dinosaurs, a series of such hits unleashed volcanic activity as well by ‘puncturing’ the crust of the earth. The combined effect of these wiped out almost 90% of life on the planet. Then for about 2 million years the action of fungi and bacteria on the dead life forms, the decay of organic matter fertilized the earth to such an extent that life came back to the earth with a vengeance – a resurrection! The abundance of vegetation and lack of competition made the reptiles to grow to humongous proportions giving us the age of dinosaurs.
The rapid increase in the Dinosaur population became a threat to plant life on earth. Nature or the ‘Controller’ of creation decided to put an end to this. Another shower of meteors around 65 million years back saw the end of the age of dinosaurs.
Thus we see that depending on the size or proportions a meteor strike can have wide ranging effects that could last for millennia.

How did the people in the Bible live to be so old?
Discuss this question

| Question found in Bible Studies |
Scientifically speaking, Human race - people of the Bible included never could have had a life span of more than 150 years or so. In those ancient millennia life span was on the average 45 or 50 years. Then how is it that people are described in the Bible as to have lived 500 or 600 years? The logical answer is the choice of the calendar.
In the book of Genesis much of the facts recorded are those that had come down through generations by word of mouth. In the days of Noah and Abraham the year of 365 days had not been known. There were mainly two periods for measuring time. The short one -day between two sunrises - and the long one between two new moons. In other words the year recorded in the Bible is of 28 day duration . Thus if a man is said to have lived to 560 years that means he lived for 20 years. Reaching adulthood by 10 years or so in those days. He could have by 20, produced even 10 children.

How do stars work?
Discuss this question
| Question found in Space & Astronomy |
When a star is formed it is mostly, if not entirely made of hydrogen. The tremendous force of gravity produce very high pressures and temperatures inside the star. At this high temperature nuclear fusion reaction begins converting the hydrogen nuclei to those of helium. This nuclear reaction is what produces the intense radiations of heat light and other E M waves. In older and bigger stars the process of nucleo-synthesis continues to produce other heavier nuclei. Thus a star functions as a powerhouse producing nuclear energy as well as a factory producing elements.

Do I have to belong to a religion and be a church member in order to be saved by Jesus Christ? Can I believe in him in my heart and read the bible at home and get the same results?

'Believing in Jesus' is not just accepting the fact that Jesus is Son of God, That he dies for us etc. etc. To believe in Jesus means to live according to his teachings. Bible is not something for just reading. If you do not practice what is taught in the Bible, the reading of it all day round in your room is not going to help.
Jesus did not show us a lonely paths to heaven. He taught us the concept of synergy - "where ever two or more of you are gathered in my name I shall be there." That is the role of the church or groups.
Jesus said that we should proclaim the good news to the whole world. We cannot do this just sitting alone in our rooms. Our very presence in a church or a prayer group is proclaiming the good news that we believe what Jesus taught - that the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
Man is a social being and our faith also must have that social dimension to it.

I do not remember coming across any such passage. All humans are children of the same Father and every one can be blessed. We can and must love every other person irrespective of his religious affiliations. Our one God will be very pleased if we pray for others or bless them.

If you had unlimited resources, what would you do for the Lord?
Discuss this question
| Question found in Religion & Spirituality In General |
1. No one can have unlimited resources. There is always a limit.
2. Even if you are the richest person on earth or the poorest person your attitude to what you have or what you do not have is what counts. What is important is that you be poor in spirit which means do not be attached to these possessions.
3. If I have 'unlimited' or plenty of resources I will not go round the world looking for poor people to give them money or food. I will manage all that resources as a trustee in the name of God, for the good of others.
4. I will of course donate sums to charities that are known to do good work and even start a trust that can cater for the needs of those in dire need, people suffering from wars, disasters and the like.

Is Jesus Christ coming again?
Discuss this question
| Question found in Religion & Spirituality In General |
The Second Coming
At the end of the world Jesus shall come again for the final judgment, to judge me. For me, the end of the world shall come, the sun will go dark, the mountains fall down, the whole world shall disappear; when I die. Then Jesus will put me with the sheep or the goat, hand down my reward or punishment. Then he shall remind me whether or not I gave something to the hungry and the thirsty, whether or not I empathized with the needy. That is the ‘second coming’ to me.
