Would a dead body decompose in space?

Discuss this question

Question found in Physics
A good question indeed. Physics, Chemistry or Biology? I shall give my view here. I will be looking forward to the answers from other experts as well.
Absence of bacteria of the air, absence of atmospheric gases etc. shall prevent most of the reactions that cause decay on earth. If the body is thrown into outer space immediately it is dead, all the enzymes of the stomach and intestines as well as the bacteria that are present inside us would be very busy for some more time. These act on the content of the bowels, moving on to the neighboring tissues and so on. The resulting chemical reactions would produce plenty of gases and new substances that cause the body to bloat and may be blister.

Is there life after death?

Discuss this question

Question found in Spirituality In General
I firmly believe, nay I know for sure, that there is life after death. A few words to support my views:
1. From time immemorial, people all over the world believed in a life after death as evident in the elaborate burial rituals from around the world. Such belief, even like the belief in God, is something common to humanity and this will not arise without reason.
2. What is created in the image and likeness of God is not the human body but the human soul. This soul is immortal. Our death is just a transition from the material to the spiritual. Socrates said, "They cannot kill me, as I am immortal. As for my body they can do whatever they want."
3. To say there is no life after death is denying the existence of God and saying that all religions are false. And humanity at all places and times had the firm belief in God and life after death.

What happens to a soul that commits suicide ?

Discuss this question

Question found in Spirituality In General
If this question was posted to me some years back I would have given an unambiguous answer - that suicide shall lead you to hell. Now I am not so sure. I still believe that suicide is one of the most serious crimes - sins. Yet
the questions on the infinite mercy of God and the circumstances that led to suicide as well as the nature of life after death all should make us think again. Is there hell as eternal damnation? Couldn't it be a state of purgatory, a sort of reformatory, where the lost soul feels and realises its mistakes, suffers the punishment and eventually, after serving the term, get pardon and entry intro heaven? We have no means of getting clear answers for these now. One thing is certain; Suicide is a great sin deserving severe punishment.

Scientists have kinda explained where man came from and how he evolved but where did dinosaurs come from, and what was there purpose?

Discuss this question

Question found in Science In General
About 250 million years back, before the age of dinosaurs, a series of meteorite hits produced such a huge dust screen that blocked the sun and suffocated the earth. These hits also unleashed volcanic activity by ‘puncturing’ the crust of the earth. The combined effect of these wiped out almost 90% of life on the planet. Then for about 2 million years the action of fungi and bacteria on these dead life forms, the decay of organic matter, fertilized the earth to such an extent that life came back to the earth with a vengeance – a resurrection! The abundance of vegetation and lack of competition made the reptiles to grow to humongous proportions giving us the age of dinosaurs. The rapid increase in the Dinosaur population became a threat to plant life on earth. Nature or the ‘Controller’ of creation decided to put an end to this. Another shower of meteors around 65 million years back saw the end of the age of dinosaurs.

If hair's purpose is to protect the brain from heat or cold, why then do human males lose this?

Discuss this question

Question found in Miscellaneous
Early man had hair to protect the whole body. As evolution progressed clothes took over this function. Today the evolution may be asking the males to wear hats and women to use the hair to add to their beauty - attractiveness. I wonder if bald head is more appealing to females! I wish some of the ladies on our expert panel will explain this.

What does the bible tell us about how the world came about?

Discuss this question

Question found in Religion & Spirituality In General
The author or authors of the first book of the Bible was not or were not well versed in quantum physics or the evolutionary sciences of modern cosmology or biology. Even so, the view held by certain scholars, that the first few chapters of Genesis form part of a myth cannot be accepted as such. The verses of these chapters are pregnant with meaning if you read them in the right spirit of humility, realizing that we do not have nor will ever have the answers to all questions regarding the universe and life, realizing that we shall never be omniscient like God. Once we have all the answers, once we know everything, we cease to be humans. The horizon of knowledge is as elusive as the horizon of the cosmos. That is what science is all about. That is why we do not expect scientists to put an end to their investigations by accepting that God created everything and controls everything. We, humanity, must go on the never ending search for the answers for the mysteries of the universe and of life and at each new finding we must be able to say, ‘How great thou art my Lord’. While agreeing with the view that the verses of these chapters should not be taken too literally I believe that there is a lot of sense there and in the following pages I am making a humble attempt to read and understand some of these verses in the light of modern cosmology and biology.
(The verses of the Bible are given in italics.)
In the beginning God created heaven and earth.
There was a beginning, 13.7 billion years back (according to cosmologists in the year 2003) when God created singularity - a something that was almost nothing in size but everything in mass - that included all the matter of our universe. Time and space, energy and matter, all had their beginnings at this instant of creation. Here the term ‘heaven’ can be taken to mean space-time continuum and ‘earth’ to mean matter-energy conglomerate.
And the earth was without form and void.
There was no Bang, Big or Small, no fragmentation, only inflation. The space-time-matter-energy complex was quark-gluon porridge, without form- no spiral or oval galaxies, no circular or elliptical orbits - no shape. There were no atoms or molecules, no pulsars or quasars, no stars or planets, the cosmos was void.
And the darkness was upon the face of the deep.
The radiation era had not yet started, there was no light. The then universe, the event horizon, all was dark. At the moment of creation the temperature of the singularity was infinite according to modern cosmologists. So also the density and pressure. Though it was so hot there was no heat or light radiating from it - no photons. It was almost like a black hole, but different. Black holes do not allow radiations to escape. In singularity there was no radiation at all, internal or external.
And the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
Cosmic and chemical evolution, to be followed by biogenesis and biologic evolution, started under the guidance and direction of the Holy Spirit of God, to bring order from chaos, to balance gravity with antigravity, to accelerate or decelerate the rate of inflation or expansion, the rate of evolution, to continue the sublime process of creation.
And God said, let there be light, and there was light.
A hundred million years after the beginning, after electrons had taken up their positions in the orbits of hydrogen and may be helium atoms, after the intensity of gravity eased and the universe grew into something more than a black hole, the photons began to be emitted - the radiation era started and there was light.
This was the first phase of creation - day one.
And God said, let there be a firmament in the midst of waters and let it divide waters from waters.
At the time of the birth of our universe or soon after that, the enormity of the matter in such a small space would have produced such strong gravity enough to snuff the universe out of existence. This did not happen and this could have been due to another force that opposed gravity. This is known as anti-gravity or vacuum force and could be the same as the cosmological constant in Einstein’s equations. This is the same force that is said to be responsible for the recently observed acceleration in the expansion of the universe that is taking place right now. The scientists had expected the rate of expansion of the universe to be decreasing and while attempting to test this hypothesis they found that the rate is increasing. If this force was present throughout, the matter of the universe would never have accreted into galaxies and stars.
About one billion years after creation gravity overcame the force of anti-gravity (How? Somehow!) and the lumps in the cosmic porridge began to accrete into galactic clusters, galaxies and stars. Thus empty space or firmament was created between the waters of the world, between stars and between galaxies. The cosmos was no more without form or void.
This was the second phase of creation - day two.

The above passage is from an article called 'Adam and Eve'. If you want to read more go to vempenysviews on the internet.

Why am I so insecure and have no confidence?

Discuss this question

Question found in Psychology
Lack of self-confidence and feeling of insecurity are problems that most people face at some stage of their lives. In the fields of psychology or sociology you may get different reasons for these. Often they are associated with the personal history of each individual. Without knowing this no answer can be reasonably made.

I feel that what is important here is to know how to handle it and not to find why am I feeling so. A few pointers may be given here as to how to handle these two problems.
1. Do not compare yourself to other people and judge yourself on some other scale. Each human being is important and special in his/her own way.
2. Do not feel that you have to be *successful* as judged by others by producing much wealth. There is plenty of wealth around. The real success in your life comes when you learn how to utilise the available resources so as to make you happy. Happiness is not proportional to wealth and any one can be happy if one chooses to be so.
3. Do not worry about the future. Do not have regrets of the past. Learn to live in the here and *now* of life. Do not go hunting for greener pastures.
4. Examine the priorities, the value system, in your life.
5 Re-examine the utilization of time in your daily schedule. Allot time for leisure or relaxing, personal or spiritual reflections and for interesting reading and the like.
I am sure you can overcome the problems of insecurity and improve your self confidence easily. That is what counts.

Why could water boil faster at the top of a mountain?

Discuss this question

Question found in Science In General
Boiling point of water decreases with pressure. At sea level it is 100 degree Celsius. At the top of the mountain, depending on its height, the boiling point will be much lower. This is because the pressure over the water surface is lower. The pressure on the water surface prevents water molecules from escaping. In the pressure cooker the boiling point is much higher than 100 degrees.
