Cleaning agent must be a solvent. Water is the universal solvent that can dissolve most stuff that bother us as dirt. But water does not dissolve organic stuff like fat. Here vinegar helps as an organic solvent. Simple as that!

Why cant a big bird like an ostrich fly?
Discuss this question
| Question found in Science In General |
The biggest problem of flight is gravity, weight, the pull of the earth which depends on the mass of the body. Big birds like eagle can soar high because the wing spread is huge and can overcome gravity by the aerodynamics. For the mass of an ostrich to be lifted by aerodynamic the wings have to be unnaturally huge.
These big birds, in the process of evolution have adapted to earth bound existence and hence the wings have deteriorated in size while the body has grown in mass.

How dangerous is a fire in an antarctic station?
Discuss this question
| Question found in Science In General |
Fire becomes dangerous when it is wild fire. Domestic fire, at the hearth, fire place, or in the kitchen are useful as long as it is controlled - tamed. Carelessness and misuse or abuse makes it wild and dangerous. In places like a forest of gum trees full of combustible vapours ion the atmosphere as in Australia, the fire becomes very dangerous - goes out of control. Compared to that in the antarctic or arctic there is no chance for the fire to spread or be uncontrollable. Still if you have a fuel storage place there and the petroleum products catches fire, that will cause a lot of damage but there is no danger of its spreading to the neighborhood.

Where does the concept of soul fits into the basic schema of life sciences?
Discuss this question
| Question found in Science In General |
Science deals with material aspects while religion with spiritual aspects of our existence. Yesterday I read an article In which was an interesting sentence: Science does not need religion and religion does not need science; but man needs both. Coming to your question, the concept of soul does not fit into the basic scheme of life sciences. It cannot.
Ironically, life sciences cannot explain satisfactorily what life is or how a combination of molecules became alive in the first instance, even as cosmology so far has failed to explain or understand how or from where the primordial matter of the cosmos – of the Big Bang - came into existence. These are for religion.
Scientists cannot say God created the universe or life or the soul because these questions are beyond the scope of their field. So also religious philosophers must not say that there was no evolution or that the world is only 6000 years old.
We do not refer to the scriptures to see how a television set functions and we do not refer to sciences to learn about the soul.

How to solve algebraic word problems?
Discuss this question
| Question found in Education In General |
First we identify the quantity to be estimated or whose answer is to be found. Give it the symbol, say, x. then use the words of the problem to build an equation.
Well, let me give a very simple example. If 6 eggs cost 30 cents what is the cost of one egg.
solution.
Let the price of one egg be x
the equation: 6x = 30
6x/6 = 30/6
x = 5
Thus we say the price of one egg is 5 cents.

How to solve algebraic word problems?

Discuss this question
| Question found in Education In General |
For such a long time no answer was given to this by anybody. This is because the question was not easy to give an answer. Now, if you submit an algebraic word problem from a text book we can show how that is solved.
But I may give the general principle. First we identify the quantity to be estimated or whose answer is to be found. Give it the symbol, say, x. then use the words of the problem to build an equation.
Well, let me give a very simple example. If 6 eggs cost 30 cents what is the cost of one egg.

I have never met my father and I'm 25 years old. This past week I just found him and talked to him for the first time ever. I live in CA and he lives in VA, but he doesn't act like he cares that I found him. He is nice to me on the phone but I'm the one that calls him. He said he would call me back the first day I talked to him and he didn't. Should I keep calling him and stay in contact or wait for him to call me? and what if he never does? I was so happy that I found him and got my hopes up that he wanted to see me but now I'm not sure how I feel. It makes me very sad that I don't know if my dad cares about me or not. Anyone have any advice?

If I were in your position I would give him two more chances at least taking the initiative to keep in touch.. And at the next meeting make sure to let him experience genuine love selfless filial affection from you. He can't resist that.

After death, how long does it take on average for the human body to decompose to a skeleton?
Discuss this question
| Question found in Science In General |
The duration for decomposition varies according to various factors - temperature, other atmospheric and/or soil conditions, the abundance of bacteria and the like. Buried in hot humid tropical soil this would be fast - a year or so for the skeleton to be free. Buried in ice - say in polar regions - it may remain unchanged for centuries.

At temperatures above 0 degree Celsius, ice is wet due to the gradual melting process. A thin layer of water on ice makes it very slippery like any other wet smooth hard surface.
