History of mathematics?

Discuss this question

Question found in Education In General
Since ancient times there were some crude systems of counting in various cultures. But the main limitation of these were that they could not express large numbers. May be in those times large numbers were not of much concern. Most numerals were some what similar to the roman numerals we use today - I, II,...V,...X etc. The popular system of today, 1, 2, 3, was the system started by the Arabs. It is called the Arabic numerals. In the early form this even had limitation - only for small numbers. Then came a new concept from India - that of zero - 0 . Decimalization made the frontiers of mathematics or numerals far and wide. With the introduction of Zero we could go on to huge numbers like millions or billions.

The history of mathematics we learn in text books is usually the European version saying that the Euclid was the Father OF GEOMETRY OR that calculus came into being at the time of Newton and so on. But many branches of mathematics including algebra geometry and calculus were used by the great mathematicians of China and India long before Europe became literate.

Why is it that we do not eat meat eating animals, are there any meat eating animals humans eat?

Discuss this question

Question found in Animals & Nature
The food chain in nature is a very interesting study and your question had crossed my mind often in the past and had given it some thought. But I have not come across any material on this question.
On the food chain we belong to the omnivirous group. This means we can be herbivores as well as carnivore. Many humans, especially in India and the orient are vegetarians and today many studies show that vegetarianism is very good for health. I guess the next best thing, that is, if you want to eat meat, it has to be the meat of herbivores or plant-eaters.
As to the question if humans eat meat eating animals, well there are people who eat snakes who feed on frogs and rodents. Also some people eat meat of dogs and cat, though these are not common practices. Mostly people eat plant eating animals.

Comments :
Thanks for the answer. Interestingly even the bible warns us against eating any meat eating birds or animals; which I think was a health warning as much as anything else.

What is the beginning of eternity at the end of time and space, the start of every ending, the end of every race?

Discuss this question

Question found in Space & Astronomy
A very interesting question indeed – a bit confusing though.
By its very concept, eternity has no beginning or end. Eternity in reference to time is like infinity with respect to space. We may say that at the end of our earthly lives we enter eternity or eternal life. It could also be said that our short lives or even the billions of years of the existence of our universe is a tiny speck in eternity.

There were and still other theories and no one has been able so far to definitely say it all began this way.
New Scientist (weekly) of 28 April 2007 gives thee possible scenario, three probable explanations of the origin of the universe. So until today no explanation had been given.
As for black holes also there are various views. We are still waiting for a proper explanation of this, dark energy and dark mater.
