Hi please could you tell me, is it possible that in certain parts of Siberia it gets so cold that you could boil water and once boiled, you could pour it on to the floor and it would turn to ice before contacting the floor? I would be grateful if you could let me know as my husband is having a conversation with a colleague about it. Thanks, Louise.

Dear Mrs Louise O'Brien,

I am not sure if this can or cannot happen. But some research on the net found me these links and materials. Check them out and find a conclusion by yourself. Maybe, rather than pouring the water flinging it will make it crack and freeze

1. An excerpt from "The Reindeer People: Living with Animals and Spirits in Siberia" by Piers Vitebsky (Vitebsky is a British anthropologist and has lived in Siberia off and on for more than two decades) is given below.

"In northeast Siberia, temperatures can drop to 96 degrees below zero. Boiling water flung from a teacup will freeze before reaching the ground."

2. A photograph depicting this from another site

3. I just got 2 links for video's also and they are 7 and 5 Mb in size respectively. This video contains an experiment conducted in Siberia regarding this boiling water matter. it clearly shows the water turning into powdered ice the moment it is flung to the air.

In which athletics event is the women's record holder better than the men's?

Discuss this question

Question found in Sports Trivia
The only event in which I was able to track a better performance from a women athlete than a male one was in the Discus throw event.

In Males discus throw event, Jürgen Schult of East Germany holds the record with a distance of 74.08 m. In the women’s event, Gabriele Reinsch (her too from East Germany) holds the record at a distance of 76.80.

By the way, there is a slight difference in the Disc that is used for this event in the men and women competition. A disc with a diameter of 220 mm (8.66 inches) and a weight of two kilograms (4 lb 7 oz) is used for the men's event, and a disc with a smaller diameter of 182 mm (7.17 inches) and one kg (2 lb 3 oz) weight is used for the women's event.

Which two inventions allowed European Astronomers to become world leaders in Astronomy in the 1500's and 1600's?

Discuss this question

Question found in History In General
One of the inventions that boosted the European Astronomy during the 1500 -1600 period was telescope. Galileo Galilei made his own telescope in 1609 and he is generally credited with being the first to use a telescope for astronomical purposes [even though it was not an invention by him, he first used it for astronomy].

The second invention, I am taking a guess, is it the astrolabe ?

How long does a stingray live for and how does it reproduce?

Discuss this question

Question found in Animals & Nature
There are about 70 different living species of sting rays and they all have almost different shapes, sizes, color, fins, teeth, habitat, diet, personality, method of reproduction, and other attributes.

An approximate age span would be 15-25 years depending on where they live and the species.

Regarding the reproduction, Some rays are oviparous (laying eggs) while others reproduce via aplacental viviparity (giving birth to live young that develop in the womb without a placenta). Rays have a long gestation period and produces relatively few young and there for the growth of ray populations is slow.

In C language, in scanf statement, why do we not put & before a char array when we put it with all others like int?

eg: scanf("%s",name);

as opposed to

scanf("%s",&name);

Discuss this question

Question found in Programming
Scanf function requires the address of the first element in an array as it's argument, when it is used with the "%s" format specifier. The content of the first element of the array contains, the address of the start of the array - which is needed by scanf(), and so there is no need of using the '&' (addressof) operator again.
