What do turtles like to eat?

Discuss this question

Question found in Animals & Nature
As our expert 'Journo' has pointed out, the answer to this question can be different based on the species of the turtle.

Most turtles are omnivores. So they will go for both plant materials and animal food. The non vegetarian menu preferred by a turtle can include various kinds of fish, snails, worms, and insects. The leatherback turtle and the hawksbill turtle dine on jellyfish whereas loggerheads feed mainly on hard-shelled organisms like lobsters and other crustaceans. Map turtles and river terrapin feed on snails and plant stems and fruits.

Many other species of turtles are strictly herbivores, and only eat grasses, leafy plants, flowers, fruits, and even cactus. The Galápagos tortoises like tomatoes and green turtles prefer sea grasses.

Turtles don’t have teeth and instead of teeth they have a hard, sharpened edge in their mouth which is used to bite with.

Where did the saying "put that in your pipe and smoke it" come from?

Discuss this question

Question found in Miscellaneous
This phrase is usually used to express triumph (to belittle someone) or as an exclamation. It is used when delivering information that is contrary to the belief or understanding of the other party. It informs the other party to contemplate or work on your arguments against his thoughts. It is often used as a rude way of telling 'I don't agree with you'. This phrase is seen used from early 19th century. This phrase is used extensively in the USA.

Some early references to this phrase are:

1. In the poem 'The Lay of St. Odille' by Richard Harris Barham. It was written in 1840.

"Till you faithfully promise no more to say Nay,
But declare, 'If she will be a nun, why she may.'
For this you've my word, and I never yet broke it,
So put that in your pipe, my Lord Otto, and smoke it!-- "

The full poem can be accessed from this link. http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/the-lay-of-st-odille/

2. In a novel 'Thirlby Hall' by W.E. Norris written during 1800's

This shows that this phrase was in use during the 19th century. As to the exact origin of this phrase, I personally lack any information.

If you put a coin into a bottle and then insert a cork in the bottles opening, how could you remove the coin without taking the cork out or without breaking/melting the bottle?

Discuss this question

Question found in Mysteries & Enigmas
You can push the cork into the bottle (so we are not actually taking the cork out) and can shake the coin out :-)

Why are apples more effective at keeping people awake in the morning than caffeine.

Discuss this question

Question found in Food And Drink In General
Coffee contains caffeine and it acts as a stimulant. So you will feel a bit of hyper energetic for some amount of time, but as all stimulants after that hyper drive your body will feel a bit low due to the sudden slump in the energy level. Caffeine has absolutely no amount of energy (kilojules) in it. Apples do not contain caffeine but it has fruit sugar and a lot of carbohydrates which the body can convert to raw energy. So the body gets the needed energy boost to function. Since the apple doesn't have the stimulating effects which drives the body to a hyper state you will feel no tiredness after sometime as in the case of coffee.

What is a NULL Macro? What is the difference between a NULL Pointer and a NULL Macro?

How would you obtain segment and offset addresses from a far address of a memory location?

What is the maximum combined length of command line arguments including the space between adjacent arguments?

When reallocating memory if any other pointers point into the same piece of memory do you have to readjust these other pointers or do they get readjusted automatically?

Discuss this question

Question found in Programming
I am giving opinions on some of the doubts posted by you.

1. A NULL macro is used to represent the null pointer in the source code. It has a value of 0 associated with it.

2. A null pointer is a pointer which doesn't point anywhere.

3. Regarding the maximum length of command line, it is an environmental factor and this length will depend on the OS in which the program is deployed.

What is near, far and huge pointers? How many bytes are occupied by them?

Discuss this question

Question found in Programming
This question is already asked earlier by another user and was answered. Please use the below given link to find that answer.

http://www.simplyexplained.com/question_answers.asp?id=12800

Any way I am pasting the answer given by me to that question below.

In the 16-bit x86 segmented memory architecture, each logical address representation is in a segment offset format. And on this architecture 4 registers are used to refer the four segments (which are data segment(DS), code segment(CS), stack segment(SS) and extra segment(ES)).

Pointers which refer to the current segment are called Near pointers. These pointers are fast but are limited to the current segment or the 64 Kb of memory that the program can access and they cant change the DS and CS register values to point to other segments.

We can reference memory locations out side the current segment by rewriting the DS and CS and this makes use of Far pointers and Huge pointers. Far and huge pointers are used to access memory outside the current segment and the difference is that huge pointers are normalized.

Why are the Addicks called so?

Discuss this question

Question found in Sports In General
The Addicks is the nickname of Charlton Athletic Football Club based in South East London. Charlton's fans are also known by the same name. There are more than one theory for the coining of the term Addicks for the team.

1. One theory is that the phrase is simply a corrupted form of 'Athletic'.

2. Another theory states that Addicks is the southeast London pronunciation of "addict".

3. But the theory that is backed by most of the Charlton historians is the one which is associated with Arthur Bryan - a local fishmonger and sponsor of Charlton during 1900s. He used to offer an 'addock dinner' (fish and chips) after the game to players and opposition and advertised his wares by having a fish on a stick, walking up and down the touch line. So it is generally considered that Arthur Bryan's hospitality gave rise to Charlton's famous nickname, the "Addicks" , a corruption of the word haddock. The name caught on publicity in the 'The Addicks cartoons' which appeared in the 'Kentish Independent' and it featured the history of the club. In the cartoon the team is called by the name The Addicks.

Charlton have also been known as the 'Robins' and the 'Valiants'.
