Suppose the bookstore increases the price of pencils by 100%. Will this price increase raise or lower the bookstore's total revenues? Why or why not?

Discuss this question

Question found in Business & Economy In General
You have just described how Wal-Mart does so well. They have "loss leaders". Those items that cause you to become interested in a product of that type, say a 49.98 microwave oven. Then you think "no potato timer?" then you look down the microwave isle. You walk out with the 89.98 microwave that has a much higher margin on it.
Their is a price point for every product at a location. This is the "price proposition". I can sell beer for 5 times the price at a ball game than a grocery store. If you were a campus bookstore, people were buying 300 dollars in books, you could sell a 30 cent pencil.
And it would be smart to do this. Will revenues go up?
Oh yeah. The mark up is pure profit. The "add on" items are what drives retail.
You have heard "can I super size that for you for 30 cents more?" Even though you think that you have gotten the better of the deal, they got 30 cents from you and hundreds of other folks in return for 10 cents of product.
Large margins on small product make big profits.

What is the basis of the global financial system?

Discuss this question

Question found in Business & Economy In General
Speculation of return on invested capital.
Ever notice that rich countries have stock markets?
Against its will China was forced into the currency trading business.
The U.S. demanded it as part of investing in that country's workforce.
The value of moneys is how to measure countries wealth.
The value of stock is how to measure the wealth of a company.
The raise of either is caused by the speculation of positive performance.

This has given way to a theory that states that countries at war are so inefficient at producing real product that their collective value drops.
Thus "War is good for the economy" is a hoax. It has been known in the academic circles for years. The logical flog is called "The Broken Window Fallacy"

The value of a nation and its people revolves around what other nations and people will buy. You can't sell bombs that you are going to use. You can't sell anything that you are going to use yourself.

China will soon produce Ford vehicles. The deal is sealed. Chinese people should make them for their own good but buy their own Chinese owned factory built products for their good. And they are.

Produce, produce and demonstrate that there is a plan to produce even more.
Chinese proverb says if you are thinking a year ahead, plant a crop. If you are thinking 20 years ahead, plant a tree. If you are thinking 100 years ahead educate your people. They are doing just that. They will move from manufactures, to become the leaders of industry and design.

Their stock is going up! 1 Chinese yuan = 0.125415439 U.S. dollars today.

A little more on finance and a little less on China...

I have heard that when you die the soul leaves this body and then it shall be able to see all your ‘dear departed ones’. Let us say I meet my mother long dead but whom I remember clearly. If I don’t have a body or eyes and if she has no body how shall I see her or what do I see and how do I recognize her? Will it be like in a dream?

Mr. Vempeny I have been watching your work on SE. I love it. You are my favorite writer here. I know that you did not ask to know that I am your biggest fan but..... there it is. Your work is not just smart and accurate. You are unbiased and brilliant. It is difficult to give facts without commentary.
Because you are obviously bright, I want to answer your question with logic.
A spirit fills a body and at death there is a separation. I believe that form follows function. That is to say that you don't have stuff you don't need.
sexual organs, digestive system, bone marrow to produce white blood cells, skin coloring, etc.
I have a friend who believes that when a person dies, they go to heaven which is a giant city where good people all have real estate. Really good people have big mansions. Not so good people live on the more modest part of town where the property values are diminished. In heaven, all of the values we learned on earth are turned upside down.
In that world, everyone has eyes and noses that work. They appreciated fine mahogany handrails that curve up marble stairs to the upstairs bedrooms. There probably have heavenly bathrooms and toilet paper that never runs out. That is what is comforting to them. This is a land of continuing desires.
In this heaven, you have eyes and there are people who need glasses. A person has stuff for two reasons, the bible says that their is stuff up their that is owed to the righteous and, second, it is comforting to know that after this life, there is a life that mirrors this one.

For me, it seems like it is a very greedy heaven.

I think that the next life is one of knowing. I think that I will not need to focus eyes to see but just think and it will be visible to the mind. Even blind people can do this now. We will "see" each other differently because we will be different then. It would be easy to feel my mother in heaven if God willed it. I could find her. But then again, what is proximity? If the feeling is strong, complete and continuous, wouldn't it be better to have that skill that having sight? Imagine being and at that time connected to everyone everywhere. That is a beautiful thought to me.

I have a 125 Reiju Matrix rs2 I absolulty love it the only downside is its top speed can you tell me if it restricted in any way and if so how do I de-restrict it.?

Discuss this question

Question found in Motorcycles
I know. I have a Buell M2 Cyclone 1203cc. I love mine but the top speed is around 140mph. I should say, that is as fast as I have had it.
The first thing.
What is it's highest gear?
Is it rev limited in first gear?
When you get to the highest speed that you can, does it cut on and off and act like a switch keeps getting switched on and off?
Does that stop if you pull the clutch in?
It could be that the valves are floating at too high of a rev or it can be that you have a rev limiter. I doubt that there is a "top speed limiter".
Trying what I just told you will tell you.

I have frequent troubles in my relationship, I do not have the time to go to a counselor or whatever. The problem is I have a hard time trusting my girlfriend... There is simply no zest in the relationship, it is too boring and dry... any suggestions?

Discuss this question

Question found in Miscellaneous
I would guess that you should not trust your girlfriend. She may not be looking for someone better but she will find one. She needs to find a man who finds pleasure in making things new and exciting. Someone who is so invested in the other person's happiness that they are willing to make it a priority. They say that relationships are all about trust. THEY ARE NOT! NO! They are about having a life in common. Being with the other person. Wanting that person to be greater than they are right now. Making them happy at all costs. Giving. Giving. Giving.
I know a man who has a beautiful girl. She is 22 years old and beautiful and built like ..... I can't say it here. Lets just say "wow". He is in his mid 50's. You need his advice, my friend. He tells anyone who will listen to him that he is happier than he deserves to be. Yes, he likes the sex but more than that. He loves her. He tells her this. "I am going to spoil you so much that no one will be able to interest you with a cute smile or a new car or ... " See? He plans. Plans to make her so happy that she can think of no one else. That is a lot of effort. He loves taking her to new places and showing them to her. Everything is brand new when you share it with the one you love. I know that you don't know this yet. Your relationship is a reflection of you. You are not trustworthy, you are boring and you are dry. You have no zest for life or love. You don't know how to make a woman so happy that you can feel secure. This relationship may be over but you can start the next one right, can't you?

Comments :
simple superb... an eye opener... guess experince teaches... i love her. guess it figures, if i change the way i look at myself our relationship changes...

Thank you

How do I start a business?

Discuss this question

Question found in Jobs & Careers
Step one. Find a need in the market place that is either:
* Never been
* Never been met to the customer's satisfaction
* Where you can better the price of the competition
* There is still room in the market for a new comer
Step two. Assess your ability to fill this spot in the market.
Step three. Verify that you can be in this business at a sizable profit.
If you can only make about what a bank will give you as interest, you might as well invest in someone else's dream.
Step four. Develop relationships in the field of your new business. Profit comes from strong relationships. Poor relationships in your field can cost you everything.
Step five. Save up. Don't borrow money that is interest baring. That interest payment is about as much as you expect to make on your venture. And with the new bankruptcy laws, don't borrow more than you can pay back.
Step six. Go to the courthouse and register your business name.
Step seven. Register with the regulatory agencies that pertain to your business. When you register for the name, they will tell you about where to look for regulatory agencies.
Step eight. Start small. This is not the time to risk everything. This is time to pay to learn the business. Example: if you want to open a store but have never worked in a store, get a job in a store to learn how someone who is successful.
Step nine. Pay yourself first. There is no way that you will be successful if YOU are not liquid.
Step ten. Cheaper, Better, Faster. Make plans to reduce the cost of doing business by 20% each year. Make a plan to do what you do higher quality. Make a plan to do what you do faster by 20% than you did last year.
This is how you plan for positive change. This will add capacity and profit.
Step eleven. Think about being liquid. You have to have cash reserves. Don't get caught where you have all of your money invested.
Step twelve. Think about growth. "Give yourself a raise" is based on this idea. If you grow a larger business and take the same cut of the profits, you get more money.
Step thirteen. Pay your bills on time, every time. Remember step four?
Step fourteen. Measure yourself to your cheaper, better, faster goals.
Step fifteen. Modify your methods and your plans to meet your goals.
