This requires a VERY complicated answer!
First you have the gross losses of the people and businesses being displaced. That (normally a ripple but in this case a tidal wave) affects the "support" businesses which in turn affects their support businesses - and so on.
There is also the issue of incoming goods not being able to be warehoused or even unloaded from a freighter ship. Supplies, raw materials and consumer goods can't make it to the intended customers. All of this in turn affects the people working (or in this case no longer working) for the businesses and support businesses. No income for business=no income for workers=dead-end for economic base. Marketing, no matter how shrewd cannot bleed money from thin air.
The secondary level to this, is the construction firms, utility firms, and their sub-contractors will likely be making a much better than usual income thanks to the rebuilding effort and and the US and other countries aid packages. Unfortunately, most of that money will probably not stay in the affected region.
Eventually, the economy will settle again, the affected areas will have new and improved infrastructures (roads, communications, sewage etc). And with this a booming economy will likely stem from it. But not for a few years.
Another issue is the competition that is headquartered in other areas will be "ramping up" to make up the difference in shortages. They could very likely be the "last man standing" and benefiting the most from the whole thing.
This is not even close to a whole answer.

What are some good ways for a company to add to value to their customer transactions? Do customers recognize when a company is making a special effort and do they reward it with more business?

There are a number of ways to add "value".
First is a free gift with first (or every purchase depending on your product and profit margin) purchase. This may lower your margin a bit but people like free things and they like to feel appreciated.
Another way is to offer a gift or free item on the back-end - call it a "shoppers club" or what have you. It would work this way: A customer buys something from you and gets a credit in the system or tick on a card. After five or ten ticks, they are eligible for a free gift. A large chunk of these customers will forget about the credits/card and not claim the free gift even though they are eligible. You get the return traffic and the company keeps the overhead as low as it can. (Ethics aside of course...)
Free shipping, gift wrap, or a simple thank you card can go a long way!

Why are calculator keypad arrangements different from telephone keypad arrangements?
|
|
Discuss this question
|
| Question found in Electronics and Gadgets In General |
 |
Professional calculators are based on the original adding machines/10 key calculators. If the phone and calculator were standardized, people that are touch trained (by formal school or self) would have to re-learn to use by touch and would not be accepted by business as the training costs and chance for errors would be unacceptable.
The original rotary telephones had the 1 on the dial first and O last and at the bottom. To save time for the operators, the highest populations had the lowest area codes (less travel time and distance for the fingers) this is why the base area code for New York is 212 and Los Angeles is 213. When the tone/push button phone came in to being the bell labs engineers figured that the one should stay at the top left due to habit.
Basically the two are unrelated in concept and engineering, except for finger distance economy.

What are the pros and cons of a business changing from local to multinational status?
|
|
Discuss this question
|
| Question found in Business & Economy In General |
 |
nutshell:
Advantages: Bigger customer base, potentially cheaper labour.
Disadvantages: Managing the money, logistics, labour, distance and legalities
The number one advantage is bringing your product or service to many more customers. Other advantages may include being able to cut wage payouts significantly by having your new employees in less developed countries perform the work. This is different than out-sourcing as your company is in control of the design, development and production all the way through.
The disadvantages would certainly be the distance between offices, plants, warehouses and the logistics of getting the products from one place to another. Then there are whatever bribes locally and nationally that would be required to do business in the particular country you are setting up shop in. Some governments require that the company be "locally owned" forcing you to create a separate company or enterprise under a larger umbrella company. The legal fees, local bribes, and bank considerations can be cost prohibitive to 95-99% of the businesses looking at going multinational.

When should a child never be allowed to play with a sick pet ?

 |
A child should never be allowed to play with a sick pet.
The first reason is that child may be bitten by the animal that just wants to be left alone.
The other reason is zoonosis. Zoonosis is the ability of a disease to transfer from one species to another. Depending on the ailment of the pet and the child's immune system (usually not very strong in the early years) the child may be at risk. Zoonosis is quite rare in domestic pets and usually not a major concern, but in the case of a child, it is best to be safe. Leptospirosis is one of many cross species bacterial infections and left untreated/undetected can do serious damage to livers and other systems.

What city has the highest population ?

Discuss this question
|
| Question found in Business & Economy In General |
 |
The problem with this question is qualifying a city.
In the case of New York, Mexico City, Manila and many others, the metropolitan area is actually many cities and towns that have grown their margins together. Each of these cities usually have their own infra and political structures.
The Population of Los Angeles County, which is effectively Los Angeles, is just under 10 million but Los Angeles city proper is 3.8 million on latest estimates. This is not including Orange County which is also in the Los Angeles basin - nor does it include San Bernardino or Riverside Counties in which all of these have overlapping margins.
The largest population for a city proper (according to Worldatlas.com) is Shanghai, China 13.3 million

What is the biggest sail boat in the world to date and how many births does it hold ?

There are two ways to look at biggest (freight, passenger capacity or LOA (length over all)
Yes the Sedov is claimed to be the biggest ever built at 397.48 feet.
The crew compliment is 64 and cadet is 180 with a total berth of 244.
There are a number of passenger sail cruise liners that have a total berth of over 300. The LOA can also be artificially bumped by an extra bit added to a bowsprit or transom rail. A boats performance of speed is calculated by the length at the water line LWL and is typically 1.34 x the square root of LWL.
The Royal Clipper is the flagship of the Star Clippers cruise line and is the largest true sailing ship in the world, according to the authoritative Lloyd's List. It is fully 12 meters longer than the previous record holder, the Russian-owned sail training vessel Sedov. It is 439 feet long with a beam of 54 feet. Its five masts are 197 feet high and carry 42 sails totalling 56,000 square feet. *
(It is always best to look for more than one source of information)

We all have habits, but why is it that they are so hard to break?

I agree the above except maybe the qualification of addiction. Addictive habits in relation to cigarettes are one thing, but the habit of making the bed in the morning after one gets up I think does not qualify as an addiction. I see habits as self programming. The more you do something (good or bad) the more it becomes an embedded part of you. The more you do something, the more it becomes part of your nature. How many times have we done something we always do and did not realize that we did it? My wife is Catholic and crosses her self in the shower every time she is in there. I have asked about it a few times and most of the time, she does not realize that she even did it. Function performed by programming/habit/unconscious behaviour. To break a habit, I think we need to consciously force ourselves to a new habit to replace the undesired one
