Whats the best way to lose weight?

Discuss this question

Question found in Fitness & Wellbeing
Good question Michelle!

This question is one that so many people have asked over the years.

There is one fundamental rule:

To lose body fat, one must burn more calories than one consumes.

How to apply that fundamental rule is the dilemma. The body is pretty smart on its own. It has mechanisms to prevent you from starving. Because of these mechanisms, when you go on a diet that tells it it is starving, it begins doing weird stuff to prevent starvation. This is one reason why diets seem to only be a temporary solution in most cases.

Nearly universally accepted is the concept of working off more calories through exercise. There is a challenge here if you are looking for weight loss. You see, muscles weigh 7 times as much as fat. So as you tone up and build your muscles, you may see that the scales aren't showing a lot of weight loss. This really isn't a bad thing at all. Muscles burn through a lot of calories. The more you use them, the more they burn. The bigger they get, the more they burn as you use them.

Water weight is quite easy to shed but it is not good for you. Most diets have a diuretic effect, making you urinate more. Reducing salt intake also reduces the amount of water retained in your body. Caffeine, celery and green tea are all diuretics. Just be cautious of not getting enough water. Drinking more than you think you should is best!

Aerobic exercise is the best for calorie burning. This type of exercise keeps your heart rate at an elevated level for a prolonged period of time. There are any number of exercises that you can do as an aerobic activity. You should aim to burn 300 calories during each training session. The time it takes to achieve this will vary on the exercise you are doing. For example, you could spend 5 hours of watching TV to burn off 300 calories. Or, you could walk up stairs for 15 minutes. Check the link below for a very helpful webpage that explains calories burned by many activities and how to figure it out for your own weight.

Overall, I advocate a well-balanced diet and a 300-calorie-burning exercise session between 3 and 5 times per week. Drink lots of pure water.

Cheers!

What is the sqaure route of pi?

Discuss this question

Question found in Maths
Here is how to calculate the square root of pi:

This solution quoted directly from The Math Forum

There is a method called the binary search method that will find the
square root of any number N. You'll need a calculator to do this
method.

The first step is to pick a value you know to be too small to be the
square root of Pi. Call this value S (for small guess). The next
step is to pick a value you know to be too large to be the square root
of Pi. Call this value L (for large value).

Then since Pi = 3.14159.... we'll say S = 1, and L = 2.

S = 1
L = 2

Then find S^2 and L^2 (S and L squared):

S^2 = 1
L^2 = 4

Which of these values is farther away from Pi? S^2 is farther away
from Pi then L^2, so replace S with the average of S and L. Now we
have:

S = 1.5
L = 2

Continue the process:

S^2 = 2.25
L^2 = 4

Replace the small value again since its square is farther away.

S = 1.75
L = 2

Goes to:

S^2 = 3.0625
L^2 = 4

Replace the large value now:

S = 1.75
L = 1.875

Goes to:

S^2 = 3.0625
L^2 = 3.515625

Replace the large value again:

S = 1.75
L = 1.8125

Goes to:

S^2 = 3.0625
L^2 = 3.28515625

At which point we know to replace the large value again since its
square is farther away then the small value's square.

So

S = 1.75
L = 1.78125

At this point we know the square root of Pi lies between 1.75 and
1.78125. Continuing this process we can get finer and finer bounds for
the value of the square root of Pi. After a while we will see that
the square root of Pi equals 1.77245.... Since Pi is irrational we
can never get an exact answer and we have to settle for an
approximation.

Hope this helps.

An agent is paid 850$ per month plus commissions of 5% on the first 3000$ and 6% of all sales over 3000$. Find the gross pay for a month when the agents sales total 10,500$

Discuss this question

Question found in Maths
I often find that rephrasing the question helps me to understand it better.

In this story problem, I would ask these questions:

1- How much does the agent earn even if he sells nothing? Write that down.
2- How much commission does the agent earn on sales up to $3000? 5%
3- Did the agent sell more than $3000 this month? Yes
4- What is the dollar amount he earned for his sales up to $3000? .05 x 3000
5- How much commission does the agent get on sales over $3000? 6%
6- Did the agent sell more than $3000? Yes
7- How much more than $3000 did he sell? 10,500-3,000= 7,500
8- What is the dollar amount he earned for his sales over $3,000? .06 x 7,500
9- Add up the total amount in dollars he earned this month. Add #1+#4+#8

There you have it.

How do you cook chicken breasts on the stove top?

Discuss this question

Question found in Cooking
One of the easiest and most healthy ways of preparing chicken breasts on the stovetop is to stir-fry medallions sliced from the whole chicken breasts.

I take each breast while it is still moderately frozen and slice it into 1/2 inch thick coin-shaped bits. I put these into a deep bowl and squeeze the juice of one lemon, 2 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar, two teaspoons minced garlic, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 tsp coarsely ground black pepper.

Let the mixture marinate for about 10 minutes while you heat 1 Tbsp oil in a large frying pan. I use tongs to place the medallions in the hot pan. Put all of them in, but don't pour them in. You don't want to get all that liquid in there and end up boiling them. When they are all in the pan, turn them one by one until they are browned nicely. Pour in the rest of the marinade and boil it until it is reduced to a thickened sauce. (Note: you must boil the marinade so that all bacteria are killed from the raw chicken juices)

I serve this over jasmine rice with steamed veggies.

Bon Apetit!

I've got the modem on fax somehow so now I can't get online.

Can you please advise how to get back to a regular modem?

Discuss this question

Question found in Internet In General
Hi Patricia,

I see it has been a while since you placed your question. With the limited information you included in your question, it will be nearly impossible to give you a concise answer because there are so many modems and so many different computer operating systems.

What I would do is this:

Contact your internet service provider

Explain the problem you are having. Include any error codes that pop up when you are trying to connect to the internet.

The internet service provider should be able to walk you through setting up your computer to connect to the internet.

Cheers!

When I cook rice it always ends up stiff, not soft. What am I doing wrong? I always follow the directions on the bag.

Discuss this question

Question found in Cooking
I know how frustrating rice can be Amy! Excellent question!

I used to always boil my rice with a Brazilian technique. But that was hard and I usually ended up with scorched rice. When it would come out right it was beautiful!

It's been a few years now since I've boiled rice. I bought a steamer. I swear by this little contraption. It has a bottom section that you fill with water to create steam. It has another section where the steam is held around a plastic bowl. In the bowl I put 1 cup of Rice and 1 and 1/3 cup of water. Pop the lid on and let it steam for 42 minutes and perfect rice every time! Nice, fluffy, delicious rice without any possibility of scorching and it comes out exactly the same every time.

There are steamers or rice cookers out there that are pretty inexpensive. I definitely give them two thumbs up!

Can I reheat pork?

Discuss this question

Question found in Cooking
Pork is safe to reheat if it has been properly refrigerated. Bacteria grow rapidly on meat, so it is important to cover and chill it quickly if you are going to reheat it later.

I like to thinly slice pork roast and reheat it in the microwave with a paper towel covering it to keep the fat from splattering the inside of the micro. I will heat it for only about 30 seconds. I transfer it onto a nice fresh bread roll add mayo and mustard and Bob's yer Uncle! You have a quick and yummy sandwich!
