If my PC often goes more slowly than all the other ones I can see, wherever I am, on different networks; regardless of whether I have my own memory-stick etc; regardless whether I am on email, websearch or MSOffice; why is this?

Discuss this question

Question found in Computers In General
There are many factors governing the difference you see in the various computers you are using throughout the day. Generally, your computer may actually be faster than some of the other ones, but RAM, dialup vs high speed internet, CPU type, the operating system parameters, etc., will play a role in each environment in which each computer operates. Talk to a tech and ask him/her about some various "tweaks" that can be done to speed up your computer or hardware upgrades that may even help if yours is running too slow. A system administrator, system engineer, a repair tech at a local shop, all of these guys can give you some insight for your particular setup. A good setup at home will generally be a cable modem or dsl if you don't already have it, a network card instead of the USB method from the modem, a clean installation of Windows XP SP2 with IE6 or Firefox, all Microsoft updates, 512 mb of RAM, 80 Gig or higher hard drive, a graphics card with at least 128 mb of RAM on it, and a good anti-virus program, and most of all, a CPU at least running at or close to 2.0 to 3.0 gig or higher if possible. These aren't the basic requirements for running XP but it's a very good start if we are talking about desktops. When using laptops, the faster, the better since they generally operate slower than many desktops with the same specs. Also, wireless and a network port can help a lot in the many different configurations in which it may have to operate.

What is the Windows XP boot sequence?

Discuss this question

Question found in Computers In General
Thanks to the author who wrote it at:
www.compphix.com/xpbootprocess.html ,
it is well described in part as:

WINDOWS XP BOOT SEQUENCE

As with other Windows Operating Systems, when you turn on your PC, it goes through an elaborate boot up process. It begins when the computer performs the POST (power-on self test), followed by the POST for each adapter card that has a BIOS, for example, your video card. The BIOS then reads the MBR (Master Boot Record) which is in the first sector of the first hard disk and transfers control to the code in the MBR which is created by the XP Setup. This is where Windows takes over the startup process.

What comes next? Here's what happens:

1. The MBR reads the boot sector which is the first sector of the active partition.This sector contains the code that starts Ntldr which is the boot strap loader for Windows XP. The first role of Ntldr is to allow full memory addressing, start the file system, read boot.ini and put up the boot menu. IMPORTANT: Ntldr must be located in root folder of the active partition along with Ntdetect.com, boot.ini, bootsect.dos (for dual booting) and Ntbootdd.sys (needed with some SCSI adapters).
2. Selecting XP from the boot menu causes Ntldr to run Ntdetect.com to get information about installed hardware. Ntldr then uses the ARC path specified in the boot.ini to find the boot partition. The one where Windows XP is installed. It might look like this:
* default=multi (0)disk (0)partiton (2) WINDOWS
* [operating systems]
* multi(0)disk(0)partiton(2)WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home" /fastdetect
Ntldr, then, loads the two files that make up the core of XP: Ntoskrnl.exe and Hal.dll. These files must be located in the %SystemRoot%System32 folder.
3. Ntldr reads the registry files, selects a hardware profile, control set and loads device drivers, in that order.
4. Then, Ntoskrnl.exe takes over and starts Winlogon.exe which starts Lsass.exe (Local Security Administration), this is the program that displays the Welcome screen (If Professional Edition-the Windows Log On dialog box), and allows the user to log on with his/her user name and password.

How can I get round the problem I am having with my PC? When I try to download programs of any kind I receive a message Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close?

Discuss this question

Question found in Computers In General
If you have adjusted your security settings in IE, you may need to lower the security settings to the default level, which is less aggressive. Some hard core firewall programs will interfere as well but my suggestion is to stick with the firewall included with your operating system, if any, first. In XP, for example, there is no need for an additional firewall to be installed, for the home user, of course. My experience with this problem has often lead me to windows update website for those critical security-related updates that are often missed by many users. Turn automatic updates on if it is not, and see if it helps. You may have to manually uninstall and reinstall IE, but my first suggestion would be a full system scan with your antivirus software. This can be many things so patience will be needed. Good luck.

I am operating Windows XP HOme.

Whilst working on some work - pictures, text or whatever - the program freezes causing me to lose anything I am engaged on. This is now happening quite frequently. I then have to shut down and then restart. I have carried out regular maintenance such as defragging, etc but the situation remains. Is there anything else I can do? Thank you for any help you may give.

If your anti-virus program registration has expired, this is likely the problem. You can try to install another AV program but it usually interferes with the first one. The very first thing to do would be to scan for virus', scan for malware/spyware with Ad-aware or something similar, look at the results and determine how much damage there may be. This often will result in a trip to the repair shop or trying to repair the problem yourself, which can be very difficult depending on the type of computer you have. Good luck.

I have viruses but have no internet what should I do?

Discuss this question

Question found in Computers For Beginners
There may be a couple of options. Usually, an anti-virus program relies on it's updating capabilities through the internet connection but you can go to someone who has a connection and download the latest version of AVG or something similar, and the latest definition file, and put it on CD or a flash drive. You can then install and scan your computer to see how much damage may have occurred and decide after the scan to reload your computer or to fix it. It is getting harder to simply just remove a virus lately, because the files that have been attacked are usually vital to your PC's operation. There is also a possibility that the damage is minimal and can be repaired so you can carry on normal operations. Try download.com, a free, virus free location to get an antivirus program and it's latest definitions file. Good luck.

How to repair any type of printers?

Discuss this question

Question found in Hardware
It is sometimes not very cost-effective nowadays to do much in the printer repair area if you are discussing home-use printers. There's a lot more to the larger business printers as well as replacement parts such as drums, print heads, etc. I have a friend in the printing / graphics industry who goes through many of those large and massive copier/printer combinations and he bases his repair and replacement budget within the age and cost of repair versus buying a new one. There are diagnostic, "crop?" codes that you can learn by reading the OEM manuals for the really large, older machines versus the new, computerized models that are in circulation today. If your "all-in-one" printer costs 75 bucks to replace, 35 bucks for cartridges, 200 bucks for a rebuilt drum, then there is a demand for qualified repair personnel but sometimes it is just as easy to go buy a new one. A xerox repair manual will help you if you are considering this field and there are also many books out there which can help in your ventures. Good luck.

Question found in Hardware
Look under the laptop for the correct make and model numbers. If it is a Dell, for example, you would go to www.dell.com/support. When you get to the site you will need device driver downloads area. Look for your audio driver file for your model there. Also, you can roll back the driver under the device manager if one was previously installed on your laptop. Good luck.

In addition to Vik's response, you can (after you get connected), download most of your device drivers from Microsoft's update website. There may be about 90 or so but look under hardware optional updates. If you have difficulty in doing this, just ask here again.

If you haven't turned your PC off yet, try looking in the recycle bin on your desktop. If you can't restore it from there, go to download.com and get a utility called "pandora recovery". Be cautious of the items you restore as it can cause you many problems. good luck.
