My 16 year old daughter has several nosebleeds every month and when she does they are very heavy with very large clots and taking 20 minutes or so to stop. Is there anything to worry about? She had one yesterday which I witnessed at close hand and it was horrendous and she said she felt dizzy afterwards and this worried me.

Question found in Health & Fitness In General
People are more susceptible to bleeding if they are taking medications which prevent normal blood clotting (Coumadin, warfarin, aspirin, or any anti-inflammatory medication). In this situation, only a very minor trauma could result in significant bleeding.

The incidence of nosebleeds is higher during the colder winter months when upper respiratory infections are more frequent, and the temperature and humidity fluctuate more dramatically. In addition, changes from a bitter cold outside environment to a warm, dry, heated home results in drying and changes in the nose which will make it more susceptible to bleeding. Nosebleeds also occur in hot dry climates with low humidity, or when there is a change in the seasons. The following list of factors predispose people to nosebleeds:

* Infection
* Trauma
* Allergic and non-allergic rhinitis
* Hypertension
* Use of "blood thinning medications"
* Alcohol abuse
* Less common causes include, tumors and inherited bleeding problems

How do you stop the common nosebleed?
Most people who develop nose bleeding can handle the problem without the need of a physician if they follow the recommendations below:

1. Pinch all the soft parts of the nose together between your thumb and index finger.
2. Press firmly toward the face - compressing the pinched parts of the nose against the bones of the face.
3. Hold the nose for at least 5 minutes (timed by the clock). Repeat as necessary until the nose has stopped bleeding.
4. Sit quietly, keeping the head higher than the level of the heart; that is, sit up or lie with the head elevated. Do not lay flat or put your head between your legs.
5. Apply ice (crushed in a plastic bag or washcloth) to nose and cheeks.

I hope this helps and good luck.

How to LIMIT the upload traffic on specific ports, either on my PC (Windows XP) or on my router (Linksys WRT54GL). I am looking for a free solution. I am aware of several unofficial firmware replacements for my router, but none of them seems to support this feature.

You can adjust your security to a more aggressive setting from the control panel under "security". Move the sliders up a notch and see if it helps. Your firewall settings, depending on the software used for it, will help regarding incoming traffic by customization also but it can become cumbersome at times.

Question found in Dogs In General
He may be getting so much exercise that he is burning all of his energy. This is OK but it easily will hide other underlying problems such as worms, etc. You may be able to try increasing his food intake if he is agreeable or changing his food from beef to chicken to eventually lamb and rice. On large breeds always wait at least 1 hour after activity before you feed him and at least one hour after he eats before allowing him to run and play. Preferably longer. This will help avoid bloat, which will kill a big dog very fast. Check the 'net or ask your vet for his breed exercise and diet requirements comparable to his age but also try not to make him overweight due to bone and joint problems that can surface later on in his life. At 20 months, lamb and rice over the next three weeks may give you your desired results along with some supplemental vitamins. Good luck to you.

I really liked this guy named Justin. He is my best friends cousin and he told her that he really liked me and wanted to ask me out. He finally asked me out over the phone and I was really exited. The next day at school when I saw him I got really shy and my friends immediately started saying that I was getting red so when I saw him coming up to me I turned around and left. I guess he got the wrong idea. Anyways my best friend Cassandra called me over the phone and said that we should go to the mall, of course Justin had to go but Cassandra didn't want to be alone so she decided to invite this guy that she had been crushing on for a long time, Steven. Me and Steven were good friends and I always knew he would get really perverted around me but I thought that since he knew I was dating Justin he would control himself just this one time turns out I was wrong. When we got to the mall and bought our tickets to go into the movies Steven put his arm around me, I knew he was only being friendly so I didn't really make a big deal out of it. When we were taking our seats I sat next to Justin and Steven sat at other far end. In the middle of the movie Steven called Justin to come and take the seat that was next to him. Justin hesitated at first but got up immediately when Steven said that he had to tell him something important, leaving an empty seat right beside me. When Justin went to take the seat Steven got up from his and took the empty seat beside me. I couldn't believe Steven had done that and thinking that Justin would say something I only looked at Steve and rolled my eyes, but Justin didn't do anything or say anything I just saw him from the other end looking at us. My friend Cassandra was telling me to move but Why should I move when Justin doesn't even seem to care? Steven was acting all cool at first as if he had been sitting there the whole time so I just decided to try ignore the situation and enjoy the movie. A couple of minutes later I felt Stevens hand touch my hand and I moved my hand and said Steve stop! He just smiled and looked up at the screen. He tried a couple more times and every time I would say no stop, guessing I got him mad he got up and went to take his last seat. I thought Justin would come back but when I turned to see why he wasn't coming back I saw Justin and Steve talking and laughing. Then Steve came back to the seat next to me, tried to hold my hand, I yelled no and Steve said Your boyfriend said it was OK. I was so mad at Steven and Justin I didn't know whether to believe him or not so I said I don't care if he said it was OK I don't want to hold ur hand! Steven got mad and got up to take his last seat again. This time Justin came back and I didn't even want to look at him. He tried to make me laugh for the rest of the movie and I did laugh once or twice. I smiled at him when he smiled at me because I couldn't help it I kept telling myself your mad at him and your gonna talk to him about it but I really really liked him that once he smiled I felt everything should be forgotten. The movie ended and for the rest of the time at the malll we didnt talk only smiled at each other. The next day I broke up with him and we havent spoken ever since. Sometimes at school he smiles at me and I smile back. How do I make him my friend again? How can I get him back?

I agree with Mr. B. The way you type is indicative of your age just like mine is indicative of a redneck. You must learn to be direct with your actions, words, deeds, etc. Don't play games and expect others to automatically figure it out. If you are of the type who doesn't realize that you are doing this, then almost all of your communications with this guy will be mixed. Be brave, take a chance and try not to complicate things more than they already are. All you simply need is a little more courage to approach him and the wisdom to accept his answer, whether it be a yes or no. Good luck.

Entropion is the term for the eyelid rolling inward. It more commonly affects the lower eyelid, although it can occur in the upper lid. As the eyelid rolls inward, the eyelashes rub against the cornea. This problem is generally seen in foals and young horses. Its most common sign is euphoria or tearing. It is important to inspect the eyelid itself to determine that it is rolling inward. Conjunctivitis may also be present, visible as redness inside the eyelid. Changes in the cornea may occur due to the rubbing of the eyelashes against it (corneal ulcer), vascularization (due to irritation), or pigmentation (due to chronic irritation). Surgical correction is generally required. Contact your veterinarian if you suspect your horse has this problem.

Eyelid lacerations are common in horses due to their natural instinct for flight. They get spooked and bring their heads up rapidly, predisposing them to injury. Initially, lacerations of the eyelid bleed a great deal. Later, there may be a great deal of swelling. If the eyelid is lacerated, it is important that it be repaired by your veterinarian in a timely manner. Proper alignment of the lid edges is critical in the repair so the entire eye is covered when the horse blinks. If an area of cornea is left exposed it will be predi-sposed to drying out. It is also important for your veterinarian to evaluate the eye for other signs of trauma, usually within the first 24 hours after injury.

Conjunctivitis is inflammation of the conjunctival membranes, which line the inside of the eyelid and the sclera (white part of the eye). The most common symptom is redness of these membranes, but discharge may also be present. Conjunctivitis can be secondary to the injuries and problems mentioned above or primarily caused by bacteria, fungal agents, parasites, foreign bodies, viral agents, or allergies. Contact your veterinarian to discuss diagnostic and treatment options.

Uveitis is inflammation of certain parts within the eye. It can be caused by things such as an immune-mediated reaction, trauma or systemic disease. It is a very painful disease and can progress to blindness. Generally, there are episodes of active inflammation and quiescent periods. Such episodes of inflammation in the eye are the reason why the disease has been called Òmoon blindnessÓ, which the ancients believed correlated with the ÒphasesÓ of the moon. Detectable signs of uveitis may include: blinking, epiphora (tearing), redness of the conjuctiva, small pupil size, cloudy eye, photophobia and blindness. If you see any of these signs, contact your veterinarian.
