Can I connect external speakers to a new Sony 160gb Harddrive DVD recorder, or do I need to go through an amplifier?

I only want to use the speakers for playback of audio CD's using the Sony DVD recorder for playback.

Discuss this question

Question found in Electronics and Gadgets In General
The unit probably doesn't have power for the speaker's amplification but you can buy powered speaker systems,(built in amp), similar to you computer's 5.1's or whatever surround system you may have. Often, you can patch a cable from the DVD to an aux port on your PC or TV surround system without purchasing a separate system for this as long as your existing speakers are already powered from elsewhere. I run all of my audio devices and TV thru my PC surround and control it with my mouse. It works very well. I hope I was helpful and didn't make this more confusing.

I have several very painful splinters embedded in my fingers. It is from treated wood mulch. There are layers and layers of all sort of different foreign things coming up out of my skin. Help Please.

Discuss this question

Question found in Health & Fitness In General
I have climbed every type of treated power pole made and have often encountered splinters, mostly on my forearms because I always tried to wear gloves to protect my hands. Sometimes it just isn't practical but it is a habit you may need to practice a little more. My hands are severe like yours and the best thing I could possibly suggest is more lotion, (yes I know, but anyway), gloves, especially in the winter and if you are also handling anything cold, (metal, ice, chemically treated stuff), and washing your hands even if you know you're gonna get them right back into the dirt. Anytime a foreign object enters the body and it starts an infection, you will be safer seeing a doctor before it progresses. My scars will always remind me of this. Good luck to you.

My boyfriend vomits for no reason but he does drink, could drinking be the problem?

Discuss this question

Question found in Personal Health Issues
A person who drinks and does not eat well will often do this. They also may have a disagreement with certain medications that just won't mix with alcohol whatsoever. It's hard to understand the reason why a person may drink more than they should but often you will find that pain, grief, tension, and a few other causes will often contribute. Ask him to try to cut down or even quit drinking and see what happens. It might even become a good thing. Good luck to both of you.

My 22 year old daughter recently loss 25 lbs..(in a 4 month period) she was seeing a personal trainer and was taking many supplements and eating healthy (however, no red meat)..her hair has thinned out tremendously in the last month.. she has stopped training with this personal trainer, started eating regular foods and stopped cold turkey on the supplements, still maintaining her weight (she is 128 lbs 5'1")..she still goes to a regular gym and trains herself....she looks wonderful except for the hair loss..she went to a doctor 3 weeks ago when we became concerned and was tested for thyroid, blood levels, etc....everything came back normal except her blood (iron) was low..she is taking an iron pill every other day..going to see a dermatologist next week....she is so down about her hair..it is noticeable to me and her...the doctor says it will grow back..my question is WHEN? the doctor says not to worry about it and it will grow back in time....please help me, help my daughter with an answer that I don't have. Thanks

Question found in Personal Health Issues
I think the doctor is correct. There could be many reasons for hair loss and the only thing she must be concerned about would be that if there was no evidence of new hair growth. Even a spider bite can stop hair growth over a significant area for a while but usually in a while it grows back.(depending on the type of spider, of course).

From your question I get the feeling of urgency, whether it is about losing weight too fast or always taking a pill, even the anticipation of hair growth. Somethings can be done in excess and cause traumatic side effects. I don't know her weight situation, whether it is for immediate health reasons or other, but, it may be helpful to do only one thing at a time. Maybe to stop the supplements and dramatic weight loss program and focus on a regular, average diet(with iron, protein) at least until the hair growth shows positive results? Good luck to both of you.

How long do I have to keep an item before reselling?

Discuss this question

Question found in Legal Other
If it is unclaimed property that someone has asked you to store for them then there can be many legal problems resulting from the sale of it. It works similar to a contract with storage facilities. You must make an attempt, several in fact, to reasonably allow the owner to come and get it and/or pay you reasonable storage fees for it. It may very well have to be in writing and approved by an attorney who may have to present it to a judge if the property is of great value such as an auto, real estate, etc.

If you find that you must sell this property, it is your responsibility to produce titles, lien information, etc., plus you have to have a reasonable explanation as to why you must sell the property. When dealing with anything you don't personally own, it is your burden to prove ownership before the sale, and to be able to handle any legal expenses you may incur as a result of it.

One of a group of rabbit hunters was accidentally sprayed with buckshot in both of his gluteal prominences. When his companions saw that he would survive, they laughed and joked about where he had been shot. They were horrified and ashamed a week later when it was announced that their friend would be permanently paralyzed and without sensation in both legs from the knee down, as well as on the back of his thighs. What had happened?

Discuss this question

Question found in Personal Health Issues
It's tough to accurately describe this but look at buckshot. I forget the number of shot in the shell but I do know that it is the equivalent of being shot many times by a 9mm handgun. Depending on the range at which he may have been hit, this comes out of a large barrel at at a high speed and at a close enough range this can take the whole leg off with only one blast. When you have this much intense damage in multiple locations, in a tight pattern, it destroys tissue, nerves, blood vessels, shatters and splinters bones, ligaments, tendons and the after effects are heavy bruising, intense swelling, infection, surgery, skin grafts, etc.

Many people don't realize that it takes only one single 9mm shot to the rear quarters to easily kill someone. That's why a ricochet is so dangerous. The bullet hits the ground or object, flattens out, then proceeds on to the victim, (with the residue from what it bounced off of), usually from the ground upward, and does more damage than a straight, clean shot to the body in most cases. I witnessed an injury to a man where an AK47 ricochet hit him in the back. He was lucky the bullet slowed down so much because the entry wound was 2 inches just because the bullet flattened then spun into him.

In 1962 a boy playing in a train yard fell under a train. His right arm was cut off cleanly by the train wheel. Surgeons reattached the arm, sewing nerves and vessels back together. The boy was told he should eventually regain the use of his arm but that it would never be strong enough to pitch a baseball. Explain why full recovery of strength was unlikely.

Question found in Personal Health Issues
When the brain tells the body to breathe, for example, it does it. When you make a fist, you have to put effort into it or it won't happen because the muscles and tendons are not naturally designed to do this autonomously. Just like a weld that joins two very strong pieces of metal together. The weld is stronger than the metal but it is only as strong as the welder's skill in keeping the metal from fatigue during the process. This can often be the weakest link due to many unforeseen circumstances as such as a reattached limb. The limb will often fail to make the correct or complete connections with all of the nerves, all of the muscles, all of the tendons, all of the blood vessels, even the bones are weaker due to the separation and fusion.

Once a nerve has been severed, and the longer it stays that way, the longer it takes to learn the behavior again. Sometimes this is the reason for such hasty surgeries since the limb can't be attached again if too much time has passed so they do it quickly and as accurate as possible in an effort to at least regain some of the use of it after the trauma has occured. The surgery is traumatic as well due to scar tissue, hardware, almost certain infection, and sustaining the life of the person while going thru this process.

Doctors are learning even more about this process every day but it is such a risk to the patient due to past experiences and knowledge that they will not subject the patient to a better prognosis in the event that it all could easily go wrong for the patient in this heroic attempt of helping him to have a normal life again.

Cynthia, a 16-year-old girl, was rushed to the hospital after taking a bad spill off the parallel bars. After a complete neurological workup, her family was told that she would be permanently paralyzed from the waist down. The neurologist then outlined for Cynthia’s parents the importance of preventing complications in such cases. Common complications include urinary infection, bed sores, and muscular spasms. Using your knowledge of neuroanatomy, explain the underlying reasons for these complications.

Discuss this question

Question found in Health & Fitness In General
The basic reasoning for prevention of possible or likely complications are pretty simple. While a person without paralysis is able to tell if an infection, injury, muscle cramps (which have side effects), and bed sores, is present, a paralyzed person cannot feel the onset of such problems. With limited movement because of the injury, the body can develop atrophy, (Pathology. A wasting or decrease in size of a body organ, tissue, or part owing to disease, injury, or lack of use: muscular atrophy of a person affected with paralysis).

It is often the case that a caregiver will have to be diligent in watching for these symptoms because it can become life-threatening to the patient without them being aware of the seriousness of it. The lack of use of the legs can cause DVT and the muscles easily deteriorate as well. I am sorry that this has happened to her and wish her and the family the best of luck.

My refrigerator keeps tripping the GMA socket. What can the problem be?

Discuss this question

Question found in Electronics and Gadgets In General
You may have a problem within the refrigerator if the fuse is not at fault by not being the correct rating as designed for the circuit. This could also be overloading the circuit's operating parameters. My NESC knowledge is pre-historic , nonetheless, if you plug something in and it blows the fuse, it's time to step back, pause and call the electrician if you aren't absolutely sure of what you are dealing with. I am assuming that GMA is the glass fuse you are describing which can be found in some older homes. Without knowing the actual load and design of the circuit, I can't reliably help you so I would suggest the safest option will be to let an electrician look at it. It may be a simple fix and most are. Good luck to you.

After lumbar surgery, I get electric pain in my second toe. What causes it and what can I do about it?

Discuss this question

Question found in Chiropractic & Osteopathy
It really depends on how long it has been since surgery and where the surgical work was located in relation to the nerves, scar tissue, hardware installed, to the area in which this toe is affected. The lumbar area has many nerves which affect your legs, feet and toes and can become inflamed at times, especially if strained or after surgery. If this is an individual toe, there are some tests you doctor can do to rule out other areas which may be causing this, thus narrowing it down to a couple of suspects. One test will be using an electric shock generated from certain points by the doctor or nurse, which is not painful, just annoying. Good luck to you.
