Egg whites may have a role in controlling high blood pressure, one of the main risk factors for heart disease and stroke. Egg white peptides (produced when egg white protein is digested) appear to work in a similar way to the blood pressure lowering drugs known as ACE-inhibitors (Davalos et al) and also have antioxidant properties. (caution: no-one should stop taking prescribed medication without first consulting their doctor).
Diabetics and overweight people with cardiovascular conditions are advised to lose weight via a combination of exercise and whatever healthy weight- reducing diet that they can comply with. This should be high in vegetables, fruit, fish and wholegrains and be low in saturated fat and salt. Low fat protein sources such as lean meat, low fat dairy products and egg - in particular egg white - may reduce the GI and GL of the total diet and help with glucose control.
