It seems that talk of hell is out of fashion these days.
We rarely hear of it from the pulpits or even at retreats. Fear of hell used to work where love of God fails. So, what has happened to hell and the devil? Is it because the idea of hell is against the concept of a merciful God? Then what about justice? Does this mean that one can get away with murder? I am not ashamed to talk of eternal damnation. Not as a place of fire but as a state of loss: The awareness that perpetual bliss –being with God Almighty - is beyond one’s reach is a real hell. The knowledge that wealth and pleasures for which one had spent all one’s life are no more available makes it worse. Such hell does exist.
